Nigeria’s government subsidy on petroleum products officially ended in June 2023.

Since then, the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) has increased the monthly payments to all the country’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The chart below shows the top 10 states that have received the highest percentage increase in federal allocations since June 2023.

Kept saying not majorly the FG should be blamed.
States should be made accountable for allocations they collect and IGR they make.
Corruption has really eaten deep into our system.

You are right.

For example, let's take 2 states:

Before subsidy removal, Enugu was receiving ₦3.4 billion monthly; it is now ₦6.7 bn.

Nasarawa was receiving ₦4.3 billion monthly; it is now ₦12.3 billion!

etc, etc.

The Governors really need to step up and make life better for the citizens in their respective states.

OP shaking tables.

Yes o!

That's one of the ways to help our citizens become "woke" and demand accountability from their respective governors.

Nigeria has so much of God-given resources that no citizen should ever go to bed hungry.

Actually, the main idea is to let citizens become aware of what is going on, so that we can all begin to ask informed questions and also hold our leaders accountable as appropriate, at all levels.

For example,

Last year, the states got ₦3.3 trillion in total federal allocations; this year, it is projected to be ₦5.6 trillion (69.7% increase).

When the respective states' labour unions and members are armed with accurate facts and figures, they will then be able to make realistic demands - and get them!

If you compare the purchasing power of the naira you are quoting before subsidy removal and after subsidy removal you will observe a disturbing trend. Making the increment look like a big scam.

Reports are rife that a major reason for the unrelenting pressure on the Naira is that many political leaders, once they get the monthly allocations, rush to convert a chunk of it to dollars and pounds.

If true, the ongoing very sharp rise in prices is still the fault of the same politicians who were elected to work for the betterment of the society.

So, the question then is this:

Which way forward? i.e. What is the solution to all these?

I understand you but, the value of 12.3 billion after subsidy was removed is still around the 4 billion mark before subsidy was removed.

We can't keep doing merry go-round with the economy, especially with the dollar-naira value and expect serious changes.

They should identify the economic issues and fix it accordingly.

There is no immediate solution to all of these, the only solution is to kick out these thieves and bring in people who have a humane feelings for doing the right things irrespective of the prevailing corrupt practices in the land.

Imagine an interior village like mine where I voted having to share USD from the president and interestingly the president is still the same person trying to solve same issues he and his cronies are causing.

They deserve to be sent parking for saner people, the whole system is actually rigged in favour of these corrupt elements.
Re: Top 10 States With Biggest Increase In Allocations Since Subsidy Removal by NaijaphiliaBlog: 6:47pm On Feb 25
Your perspective is very interesting, because it tallies with the thesis that revolutions (whether violent or not) are prerequisite to sustained development.

For example,

The 5 great revolutions of the modern world (in chronological order) are:

1649: The English Revolution.
1776: American Revolution.
1789: French Revolution.
1917: Russian Revolution.
1949: Chinese Revolution.

That school of thought posits that each of these revolutions catalyzed the sustainable growth and development of those countries (because they took away power from an oppressive monarchy or ruling class and put it in the hands of the people).

However, the world of today is very different from those times, and our society over here is also very unique in many ways.

Nigerians love to demonize the political class, but is the average citizen truly and completely free of blame for the country's moral and economic deterioration?

How many Nigerians are truly free of tribal, religious and political prejudice? Outward religiousity is growing, but do we see true godliness?

Maybe that is where the revolution should start from.
