Empowering States and Regions in Nigeria

Nigeria stands at a crossroads. As we consider moves toward a parliamentary system and granting more autonomy to states, we have an opportunity to reshape the nation's future for the better. But we must act swiftly and decisively.

The time has come to shift away from an imperial presidency that concentrates power and resources at the federal level. Allowing states and regions greater self-determination over their affairs and resources will empower them to better serve their citizens and unlock their economic potential. From agriculture to technology to tourism, different regions have unique resources and advantages they can leverage if granted the flexibility.

We urge the National Assembly to pass a constitutional amendment within the next six months to lay the legal foundations for this new structure. The existing parties should also begin conversations on potential coalitions and power-sharing agreements for a viable parliamentary government.

In the meantime, states must commence preparations to assume fuller responsibility over policing, budgets, and economic priorities. Having their own police forces will let governors better tackle security challenges that the federal level has proven ill-equipped to address. Regional economic blocs should be formed to pool resources on major projects.

This transition will no doubt bring growing pains and uncertainty. But the long-term payoff of unlocking our nation’s promise through local control far outweighs clinging onto a dysfunctional system that has failed too many for too long. The next 12 months are critical to set the wheels of change in motion. It is time to take ownership of our future once again.
