There will be steady power if Nigeria 1. Pays a cost reflective tarrif. 2. Stops using power without paying. Fix those two issues, other palava would fix itself See Ivory coast and Ghana. They pay over 187 naira per kWh.Everyone pays Nigeria pays between 50 to 70 naira per kWh and 30-40 percent do not pay. Including your government. DeepSight: So why does GSM work despite it being in a corrupt country? If your employer was not paying you well, you won't work optimally. Better do some reading. I used to think like you until I did some reading over the last ten years. A lot of the problems in the power sector start with the tarrif and liquidity problem 6 Likes |

nairalanda1: My dear brother, I am nothing if not a reader. The telecomms industry is very different. It came in at an advanced stage in our trajectory and was picked up by international companies such as MTN, Econet (later Vmobile, later Airtel). These companies built the network as a private investment with international financing. In Nigeria, you need to understand that there is, and there has always been, a very deliberate sabotage of the power sector. This country is the largest importer of generators in the world by a large margin. There are vested interests in ensuring that we have no power and they get paid for that. If Nigeria has steady power today, believe you me, the global generator manufacturing industry will take a BIG hit. This issue is closely related to the matter of our refineries. For decades they have not worked. There are also vested interests in ensuring that they don't. Petrol importers for years made a killing on that. Please do not think for a second that these people rest. They are busy, going to and fro daily, bribing and compromising people in power to ensure their market thrives. The most important thing in making something work is political will. If the leader or leaders of a country don't want something to work, it will not work. So I think shifting the blame to the consumer is a little simplistic. As far as I know, most Nigerians would gladly pay for steady electricity. |

DeepSight: The telecoms were able to work because Obasanjo did not set their prices at 1 kobo per minute Meanwhile, discos cannot set their prices nether can gencoss. Result, they operate at a loss, and investment becomes difficult because no return on investment. Then there is the power theft. Including at high levels of government. ( Does aso Rock owe telecoms any money?). Cost reflective tarrifs. You won't work well if you were underpaid. So why should discos work well with underpaid? 6 Likes |
Re: Will There Be Steady Electricity In Nigeria A Century From Now? by DeepSight(m): 11:45am On Feb 26 |
nairalanda1: They are not operating at a loss because the difference is subsidized by government. Anyway let's agree that even if consumer payment is a problem, it is not the only problem and in my view not even the main reason for our epileptic power situation. |
Re: Will There Be Steady Electricity In Nigeria A Century From Now? by nairalanda1(m): 11:48am On Feb 26 |
DeepSight: Those subsides cannot do an adequate job of covering the losses. Because cost of production is always increasing. Therein lies the problem . If subsides worked, why isn't governors subdisidisjng GSM or dstv for us? Or foodstuffs? 6 Likes |

DeepSight: Within the next 3 to 4 years we will have steady power in Nigeria. There’s a lot of stuff going on to increase output, man. As we speak, the distribution infrastructure is being overhauled and rebuilt by Siemens, plus other stuff like gas supply to the plants are being worked on. I am 100% certain that before Tinubu’s era is done, we’ll have steady power. |

jazzman7711: If you truly believe this sir, I say with all respect, I don't think you know Nigeria. Prayerfully, four years from now we will both be alive and well and I may remember to draw your attention to this post of yours. In particular, let us see how much increase in power generation there will be as compared to today. |

nairalanda1: My brother I am not sure your are comparing apples for apples. The GSM industry is wholly private sector led whereas the power industry has significant public sector involvement. There's a huge difference. |
Re: Will There Be Steady Electricity In Nigeria A Century From Now? by nairalanda1(m): 11:58am On Feb 26 |
DeepSight: No, power is largely private. Plus even if it was government owned, it would still have to charge a cost reflective tarrif to pay for a lot of stuff Like now, most of our power comes from gas. Most gas suppliers want to be paid in dollars . Therein lies the issue. Also when GSM came, nitel was charging non cost reflective tarrif. They lost money and could not compete with mtn and Airtel. You got to make money to survive..we need something like 3 trillion yearly for some years to get power supply up to speed. Subsides plus what the sector earns yearly no reach 5 Likes |

nairalanda1: Alright. Although I didn't say power is largely public sector. I said it has significant public sector involvement. TCN for example is still government. |

I have at least 22-24 hours electricity everyday in my estate, in Lagos. Except occasionally if there’s a grid collapse or somewhat issue. And this is occasionally. However, there are places that suffer from the lack of it. And I am certain that before Tinubu finishes his 8 years, there will be a very great and noticeable change towards that. |
