The Federal Government recently removed subsidies on petrol, causing prices to skyrocket overnight from ₦184 to ₦680 per liter. This dramatic 369% price increase has been a rude awakening for citizens already struggling with high costs of living. As Nigerians contemplate converting their vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG) for relief, they have been met with another rude shock—CNG conversion prices have more than doubled in the last few months.

This simultaneous assault on the wallet illustrates the Tinubu government’s lack of concern for how its policies impact average Nigerians. While we understand the rationale behind reducing expensive fuel subsidies that strain public finances, lifting the subsidy overnight shows little understanding of, or empathy for, the burden being placed on citizens. Policies seem formulated in an ivory tower, blind to people’s daily plight.

Worse still, as desperate Nigerians explore alternatives like CNG, the Tinubu administration appears bereft of policies to ease the transition. CNG conversion kit costs have been allowed to balloon from ₦400,000 to as high as ₦1.2 million due to exchange rates. This puts conversions out of reach for many. Rather than relief, citizens have found the door slamming shut.

We urge the Tinubu government to take a more balanced, phased approach to subsidy removal, while supporting alternatives. Gradual fuel price increases could have eased the burden, while incentives and support for affordable CNG conversion may have blunted the impact. This twin policy failure has put Nigerians between a rock and a hard place.

Citizens do not oppose reform when their interests are protected. But the Tinubu government has opted for harsh policies detached from socioeconomic realities. Nigeria deserves better from its leaders. Policies lacking in empathy and foresight will only brew unrest and stall progress, not drive it. The administration must rethink its approach.
