Families who have a VHS player could have fun together watching movies—this sets actors in Nollywood up for multi-generational popularity.

Here are 3 reasons Home Videos are more consumed in Nigeria than Cinema Films
Accessibility
Because almost every home in Nigeria even those in the villages, owned a TV set, and VHS player and then upgraded to a DVD Player, they could easily enjoy a P-Collins movie… this can not be said about the Nigerian Cinema.

In Nigeria, Cinema-goers are mostly elites who live in the cities. Even in the city, the Cinema is not accessible to all the residents. For instance, in a city like Lagos, the Cinemas are located in highbrow areas like Lekki, Ikeja, etc. People who live in Oshodi, Ikorodu, or Alaba do not have easy access to Cinemas.

These people always wait for the DVD version or download it from the internet.

Affordability
In Nigeria, Cinema tickets are not as cheap as a pirated copy of a DVD. To see a Movie in Nigeria here is the Ticket prices (4k Laser): ₦7,000 Flat (Popcorn & Pet drink) while with just 500, one can buy a pirated compilation of Nollywood movies. This is very bad for the economy of the industry but opens the actors to a huge audience.

Popularity
Due to how easy and affordable the Home Video sector of Nollywood is to Nigerians and African as a whole, it opens unimaginable doors and popularity to the actors and actresses that Cinema can NEVER offer.

This is why most Nigerians do not know most of the actors like Timini Egbuson who focus only on Cinema films.

Recently,there has been debates on the popularity level of the poster boy of Home Video, Zubby Michael and Timini Egbuson. The debate started after the trailer of Ebuka’s Turns Up Africa (a travel reality TV show with celebrities as contestants) went viral on social media. Zubby Michael, in the video boasted that he is the biggest actor in Africa but Timini Egbuson didn’t take it.

Zubby Michael fired back saying he can buy Timini Egbuson. This sparked off the debate which is still on going.

I am not writing to esterblish who is richer among the two great actors but I can authoritatively say Zubby Michael is 10x more popular than Timini Egbuson in Nigeria, Africa and beyond.

In Nigeria we focus a lot on shiny objects, we don’t take time and look at the structure on ground which is why I started with how movie contents are consumed in Nigeria and Africa.

With the way Nollywood’s Home Video sector is structured, Zubby Michael will be swamped by fans on the streets of Enugu and Abuja but no one might recognise Timini Egbuson on the streets of Asaba and Owerri. Yes he will be recognised in highbrow areas of Lagos like Ikoyi, Lekki but might not get such attention in Oshodi.
