Ex-npn Chief, Akinloye Dies by egin(m): 12:15am On Sep 20, 2007
Foremost politician and elder statesman, Chief Adisa Akinloye, succumbed to the cold hands of death last night at the age of 91 at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan. A family source, who was with the Chief before he died, said that the former National Party of Nigeria (NPN) stalwart had been discharged yesterday and was expected back in his residence in Oje area of Ibadan this morning before he passed on last night.

The source said, “they had removed all the drips and what he was using to urinate. Yesterday, he was so happy and he even joked with everybody as he was expecting to be back in his house this morning.

“He ate cracker biscuits and drank tea. But all of a sudden, things changed and at about 10.30 p.m. he died.”

Family members, government officials, diplomats and politicians have started eulogising and commiserating with the family of the deceased politician.

Among them were the Oyo State governor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, Mrs. Gladys Adutee Vaughan, Akinloye’s immediate younger sister and former ambassador to Malawi and Zambia, Mrs. Ronke Adefowope, Justice Iyabo Yerima of the Oyo State judiciary and Oyo Action Congress Governorship candidate, Professor Taoheed Adedoja.

Alao-Akala described Akinloye as an astute politician while Mrs. Vaughan said he was a good man. Mrs. Adefowope opined that the late politician was a colossus who played politics without bitterness.

Chief Akinloye, the chairman of the National Party of Nigeria during the Second Republic was however, a controversial man.

He once was awarded a contract by the military administration of Lagos to supply the state with mass transit buses. The Chief and his group bought decrepit buses from Sweden and it became a huge scandal.

The windows of the buses were sealed. The air conditioning that the buses were equipped were not functioning. The heaters in the bus brought much discomfort to the commuters.

The complaints of Lagosians precipitated the state government to institute a judicial inquiry to look into the manner in which the buses were purchased.

Adisa Akinloye and his group were found guilty by the panel headed by Mr. Justice Basil Adedipe in the contract scandal called Scania.

The politician was subsequently banned from doing any business with the Lagos State government.

Akinloye played a MAJOR part in introducing Thuggery and Holliganism to the Nigeria Politics. He supposed to die and be celebrated like a statesman, but reverse is the case. In short, his death is a good riddance to bad rubbish!
