I have sympathy for the Palestinians. But I always maintained that Israel was not at fault. I blamed Hamas.

No one has said Gaza collectively attacked Israel. But whether elections held or not, Hamas is the ruling power in Gaza and what they did is an act of war.
You can't compare it with what happened in Okuama. The killers of the army are the not political authority of the area so what they did can't be said to have been done by the State of Okuama.
The army that was killed is the same army with jurisdiction over Okuama so except you want to describe it as a civil war, there is no way you can justify razing down the community for the acts of some people.
