Who actually made that law that exempt the religious groups from paying taxes? Is the law in Nigeria constitution?

Because I am still wondering why the churches, mosques and co are exempted from paying taxes upon billions of Naira they are raking annually.

Even if they are not paying taxes, why can't they be giving tithes return to the members that have been donating almost weekly?

The national assembly should try and debate about this matter.

Nigerian Laws, including tax laws, are heritage of colonialism. No originality in it.

Churches in UK and US are tax exempt. Nigeria copied and pasted the same thing.

Also, the idea that any politician would ever raise an issue about it is LAUGHABLE. Churches and mosques attract a HORDE of sheeples.

The sheeples would do ANYTHING their Pastor or Imam tells them to. That includes voting for a politician that is just looking to fleece them some more.

If anybody tries to tax churches or mosques, it WON'T take a minute before the sheeples are convinced that said person is the antichrist.

All the pastor has to say is that "the body of Christ is under attack from the Kingdom of Darkness" and everywhere will scatter.

Anyway, church business is a great business. Instead of worrying about their exemption status, I'd advice you to look into starting one as a new stream of income.

Have you not heard that Nigeria is a very religious country? Even presidents, Governors and almost every political and traditional leaders are loyal to their religious leaders.

That still didn't answer my question. Is it in Nigeria constitution?

Then it's time to revisit the matter .

Sometimes when you see the way Nigerians complain about hardship because some have this mentality that FG should be responsible for their needs, the question that always come to my mind is, how much are this people paying as tax compared to the amount they give as tithes and sakkat at Church and mosque?

Na this one pain pass..Some states even sponsor weddings.

I think it's because religious organizations (churches, mosques, shrines etc)are classified as non profit making organisations worldwide and that's how it's supposed to be.Their other profit making arm like schools, printing press, microfinance banks, bakeries etc pay tax because they are seen as profit making ventures.

Ever read about the Knights Templar? That was when the law was made within the churches all over the world. They once rule the world, they still kinda presently

Imagine you have lots of children and each of them has been given a fix amount that he or she must remit to your account periodically will you still charge them for assembling together as a group because they are gathering money to promote such assembly?

Government is collecting tax from individuals so what is the essence of asking groups of people to pay another form of tax for gathering?

The only thing that could warrant such taxation is if their assembly is causing another problem for the state but in the absence of such it's uncalled for remember that the so called government are individuals from these same religious groups so who will make such law?

Perhaps when atheists and agnostics begin their own government to rule over religious people they can introduce such a law.

Now i know why the religious won't allow atheists or agnostics in power over them! undecided

How do you mean by double taxation? The tithes they have been receiving, what have they done to it to impact their members?

Churches have thousands of people they pay monthly, Redeem alone have as many people in their payroll as a state government. That is just one of the many things they do the money.

Tithe is 10th of your earning after tax. People who pay tithe have already been taxed.

Pastors who own business or other things they earn from pay tax accordingly.
