In a decisive move against the Plateau State Government’s recently enforced Executive Order 003, which restricts trucks from entering the Jos-Bukuru metropolis, the State Joint Transport and Traders and Marketers Association have announced a one-day warning strike. The association contends that the order severely undermines their business operations and economic viability.

Executive Order 003, issued in 2024, aimed at controlling buildings and vehicular traffic in Plateau State, has led to the widespread impoundment of articulated vehicles by the government’s taskforce. This crackdown has sparked outrage among transporters and traders, prompting them to take a stand against what they perceive as detrimental policies.

Speaking to the press in Jos, Plateau State, Samaila Garba, the Chairman of the Association, alongside other executive members, expressed deep concern over the ramifications of the executive order. Garba highlighted that over 25 trucks were impounded on the first day of implementation, allegedly for violating the order by offloading goods at various stores and shops. Moreover, the government has imposed hefty fines of N500,000 on each truck, refusing to release them until payment is made.

The association emphasized its commitment to fostering peace, economic stability, and responsible conduct within society. However, they vehemently oppose the government’s decision to restrict truck movements, citing security concerns associated with parking vehicles in open spaces.

Garba underscored the association’s prior engagements with government officials, which failed to yield positive outcomes. Frustrated by what they perceive as a disregard for democratic principles and constitutional rights, the association deemed it necessary to escalate their protest through a warning strike.

In a bid to assert their grievances, the joint association demanded the immediate release of impounded trucks, the designation of specific routes for truck movements, and facilitation of goods transportation to Northeast and Northwestern states. They affirmed their readiness to utilize all legal means to safeguard their fundamental rights.

Consequently, the association declared a one-day warning strike, scheduled for April 3rd, 2024, wherein members will abstain from work to voice their dissent against Executive Order 003. They vowed to persist with their protest until a satisfactory resolution is reached with the government.
