On Wednesday 17 Apr 2024, a Federal High Court in Abuja within the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, ordered that a warrant be issued to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for immediate arrest of the former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello.

While ruling on the commission’s ex-parte motion, Justice Emeka Nwite declared that after listening to the submission of the EFCC’s lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), and reading the affidavit in support of the motion, including exhibits and written addresses, he was inclined to grant the application.

The former Governor is expected to be arraigned on Thursday 18 April 2024 before Justice Nwite along with 3 other suspects: Ali Bello, Dauda Suliman, and Abdulsalam Hudu on 19 money laundering counts to the tune of ₦80,246,470,088.88.

Spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the development via a press statement on Wednesday 17 April 2024.

Oyewale noted that the commission’s attempt to execute a warrant of arrest lawfully obtained against Bello met stiff resistance on Wednesday 17 April 2024.

Oyewale said, “The security cordon around the former governor’s residence in Abuja was breached by the current Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, who ensured that the suspect was spirited away in his official vehicle.”

“As a responsible law enforcement agency, the EFCC exercised restraint in the face of the provocation, waiting for his arraignment on Thursday 18 April 2024. It is necessary to state that Bello is not above the law and will be brought to justice as soon as possible.”
