Total distance =165 miles
Avg speed = Total distance/Total time
Let avg speed for ist part be x
Let total time for ist part by y
X = 165/y (ist part)…………..(1)
(x-22) = 165/(y+2) (2nd part)………….(2)
Now small magic
Xy = 165 from eqn 1
(x-22)(y+2) = 165 from eqn 2
Xy + 2x – 22y – 44 =165
165 + 2x – 22y – 44 = 165
165 cancel 165
2x – 22y – 44 = 0
2(165/y) – 22y – 44 = 0
330/y – 22y – 44 = 0
Multiply through by y
-22y2 – 44y + 330 = 0
Using almighty formula
Y becomes either -5 or 3
Since time cant be negative
Y = 3 hours
So x = 165/3 = 55 miles per hour

This is correct

However, the answers you got were for the 1st trip.

The time for the return trip is therefore 3hrs + 2hrs = 5hrs

Average speed for the return trip is therefore 55MPH - 22MPH = 33MPH

Me I don't know, but from the way you constructed this your calculation, how nice and organised it looks, I will say you are 100% correct. cool
