The Kremlin confirmed on Monday that Russia would take the necessary measures to ensure its “security” if Warsaw deployed nuclear weapons on its territory, following statements by Polish President Andrzej Duda in this regard.

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "The military will certainly analyze the situation, and in any case, they will take all the countermeasures required to ensure our security."

Earlier today, the Polish President confirmed his country's "readiness", a member of NATO, to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory if NATO decided to strengthen its eastern front, in the face of Russia's deployment of new weapons in Belarus and the Kaliningrad enclave. Duda told the newspaper "Fact": "If our allies decide to deploy nuclear weapons within the framework of nuclear sharing on our territory, with the aim of strengthening NATO's eastern front, we are ready to do so."

Duda spoke to Polish media after his visit to New York, where he held meetings at the United Nations headquarters and discussed the Ukraine war with former US President Donald Trump. The Polish President visited the United States last March and met with its President, Joe Biden. He stressed that discussions on nuclear cooperation between Poland and the United States have been taking place "for some time."

Duda stressed that Russia "is increasingly strengthening its military presence in Kaliningrad. Recently, it has deployed nuclear weapons in Belarus." In June 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that Moscow had deployed some of its tactical nuclear weapons in the territory of its ally, Belarus, which neighbors both Ukraine and Poland.

During the recent NATO summit in Lithuania, the allies pledged to take "all necessary steps to ensure the credibility, effectiveness, safety and security of the nuclear deterrence mission." Last October, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced that Moscow would train its forces to carry out a “massive nuclear strike” in response to a potential hostile strike, during maneuvers that included the launch of ballistic missiles, under the direct supervision of President Putin.

On the other hand, the Wall Street Journal reported that former US President Donald Trump described Ukraine in talks with European leaders as "part of Russia." The newspaper reported that Trump had often complained in the past about Washington's support for Kiev. The newspaper added, citing American officials, that Trump considered Ukraine in his talks with European leaders as “their Ukraine” and “part of Russia.”

The Guardian newspaper quoted the former director of Russia affairs at the White House National Security Council, Fiona Hill, as saying that Trump believed during his working years that Ukraine should be part of Russia. The former US president stated several times that he could put an end to the conflict in Ukraine by pressuring the Kiev regime to cede Crimea and Donbass to Russia.

In field developments, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that forces from the “South” group took control of the entire town of Novomikhalovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic. The ministry said in a statement reported by Russian media: “As a result of successful operations, units of the “South” group of forces completely liberated the town of Novomikhalovka, in the Donetsk People’s Republic.”

It added that the manpower and equipment of the 10th Mountain Assault Brigade, the 79th, 92nd, 46th, and 81st Air Assault Brigades, and the 22nd, 23rd, 28th, 41st, and 93rd Mechanized Brigades of the Ukrainian forces were bombed in the Belogorovka areas of Luhansk, Sborny, Minkovka, Klychevka, Andreievka, and Ostrye in Donetsk. It indicated that the “South” group repelled three counterattacks launched by assault groups from the 33rd Mechanized Brigade and the 80th Brigade of the Ukrainian forces in Bogdanovka and Pobeda in Donetsk.

She explained that “the losses of the Ukrainian forces amounted to up to 410 soldiers and nine vehicles.”
