The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a mandatory one-year program for all Nigerian graduates under the age of 30. Before you register for NYSC, there are some important detail you should know about to ensure a smooth and successful experience.

Before I take you through the 3 important lists you need to know about, below are three basic things you should know as well that will be very useful as you proceed in your journey to your service year.

The first basic thing to consider is the list of requirements for registration. You must have a degree or a Higher National Diploma (HND) from an accredited institution, a statement of result or transcript, a valid identification card, and recent passport photographs (about 12 copies). You must also not have any criminal record and must be physically fit for the program.

The second basic thing to consider is the list of things to take to camp. These include your call-up letter, original and photocopies of your credentials, a medical certificate of fitness, 3 to 5 piesce round-necked white T-shirt, white shorts, white sneakers and socks, a waist pouch, a mosquito net, a bed sheet, a pillowcase, a bucket, and a cutlery set.

The third basic thing to consider is the list of things to expect during the program. You will undergo a 3-week orientation camp, where you will be trained in various skills, including entrepreneurship, cultural display and competion between different platoons leadership, and community development. You will also be posted to a primary assignment, which can be in any state of local government of your deployed state, to serve in schools, hospitals, government offices, and other organizations. You will receive a monthly allowance, and at the end of the scheme, you will be given a certificate of completion signifying that you’ve successfully completed the scheme.
