In a groundbreaking move, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has dramatically increased the minimum wage for state workers from N35,000 to N70,000. This decision marks a significant shift in the financial landscape for thousands of civil servants in Nigeria's bustling commercial hub.

Lagos State's decision sets a new benchmark within Nigeria, where many states struggle to meet even the federal minimum wage of N30,000. This bold step by Governor Sanwo-Olu not only highlights disparities in economic capabilities among Nigerian states but also puts pressure on other regions to reevaluate their wage structures.

Public and Political Reactions

Many civil servants and labor unions have lauded the Governor’s decision, viewing it as a long-overdue adjustment that recognizes the rising cost of living in one of Africa’s most expensive cities.

because Anambra is struggling to pay ₦20,000 minimum wage does not mean Lagos will be wretched like your state.

Test run...

Fair, but not good enough. The government needs to understand cost of living and purchasing power issues so as to get things right.

In 2014, N18k minimum wage = 2 bags of rice (@,N8k each) and nice change...

Today, N30k minimum wage = -2 bags of rice meaning 3+ months minimum wage is needed to buy 1 bag of rice.

In 1998, N300 minimum wage = 1 bag of rice (@250 a bag) and little change.

So, while the N70k minimum wage is certainly an improvement in PP, as long as prices remain stable or reduce, over what is obtainable today, it falls short of measuring up to the PP of the common man in Nigeria over 24 years ago much less in 2014.

Good move, but still far short of expectations, in view of the current economic realities. That 70,000 translates to one bag of rice monthly.

Government must do far better than that.
