Thursday morning witnessed a disruption in flight operations at Lagos' Murtala Muhammed Airport due to a fire outbreak. Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), confirmed this in a statement.

Orah explained that all flight activities were diverted from terminal 1 to the D wing of the airport following the outbreak. Engineers promptly disconnected power from the entire E wing in an effort to contain the fire.

The fire, which originated around 5:29 am, began as smoke emanating from the E54 bridge. Orah detailed, "Smoke was detected billowing from the E54 Bridge, leading electrical engineers to immediately cut off power to the entire E Wing."

She further elaborated, "The Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services

She further elaborated, "The Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) team was quick to respond, arriving at the scene by 05:30 hrs. Initial suspicions point to sparks from an electrical unit as the cause, but a thorough investigation is ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fire."

By 06:41 hrs, the fire, which had escalated, was brought under control. Efforts to ventilate the building and clear the smoke are ongoing. Meanwhile, all flight operations in Terminal 1 of MMA have been redirected to the D Wing.

The incident caused tension and panic among airport officials and travelers, prompting them to seek safety. However, FAAN's team and the Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services have since restored normalcy at the airport.
