How Betty Akeredolu abandoned me after serving for seven years on salary of N45,000/month – Aide

Folasade Adu, a former aide to Ondo State’s immediate past First Lady, Mrs Betty Akeredolu, has come forward with allegations of abandonment after serving the late Governor Rotimi Akerdolu’s wife for seven years without any form of reward.

Adu alleged that while working with the ex-first lady, she was paid N50,000 as salary, out of which N5,100 was deducted monthly for seven years.

An emotional Adu disclosed this in an interview with Ondo-based journalist, Prince Olujimi Adekale, on Monday, April 22, 2024.

Adu claimed that when she sought assistance after leaving her job, Mrs Akeredolu refused, citing her lack of power as an excuse.

Tearfully recounting her ordeal, Adu said, “I worked for Her Excellency (Mrs Betty Akeredolu) for more than seven years. When I was going, she did not give me anything. I worked with her for srven years as her makeup artist. I used to make her hair (when she was still making her hair) and do her pedicure.

“I was paid N50,000 then, but I usually gave back N5,000 to BRECAN. They would have deducted the N5,000 before the salary was paid. They called it ‘give back to BRECAN’. Another N100 was also usually deducted as charges. So, it was N44,900 that usually gets to me as salary at the end of the month.”

Asked why the sum of N5,100 was usually deducted from her salary monthly, she disclosed that the deduction was Mrs Akeredolu’s directive.

She said, “That was how it was from the beginning. She (Betty Akeredolu) said we would give back 10% of our salary to BRECAN.”

BRECAN is an acronym for the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria, founded by Mrs Akeredolu.

It is an organisation that is galvanising action against breast cancer in Nigeria through public education, patient support, advocacy, and research.

BRECAN was founded in 1997 after Mrs Akeredolu’s experience with breast cancer.

Adu further alleged that the late Akeredolu’s wife refused to offer any form of reward when she disengaged her services after the death and burial of her late husband and former governor

She added that when she sought assistance, the former first lady claimed she could not render any form of assistance because she was no longer in power.

Adu stated, “She said she’s out of office, so there is no help that she can render.

“I left working with her after the final burial of her husband (Rotimi Akeredolu). When I was to leave, her daughter asked me what I was going to be doing, and I sent her a business proposal of about N4m to reopen my studio.

“Till now, they did not get back to me. I sent a text message to Betty Akeredolu that I needed help and that she was my last hope, that she should render help to me, but she said there was no help that she could render because she is now out of office.

“I usually reach out to her to help me. She once told me that since I have a passport, she would take me out of the country, but till now, nothing.”

She noted that she used to have a studio of her own but lost all her customers while in the service of the ex-first lady.

“I used to have a shop, but I’ve lost all my customers. So right now, I’m just at home doing nothing,” she said,

Speaking further, Adu, who broke down in tears, revealed that coupled with her job as the ex-firstlady’s makeup artist and hair stylist, she sometimes worked as her assistant.

“There’s nowhere she goes to in Nigeria that I don’t follow her. At times, I even worked as her personal assistant.”

Now struggling without income, Adu appealed for support to reopen her shop, as her husband is also unemployed.

She added, “My husband is not doing anything for now. He was working before. The vehicle he was using for a taxi, we used for Akeredolu’s second term campaign, hoping that after the campaign, we would get something. Unfortunately, the vehicle got bad, and we had to sell it at the rate of N100,000.

“I want the people of Ondo State to help me because, as of now, there is nothing. I have been thinking and crying every day. I need help to reopen my shop.”

Is this a case of human rights abuse or a case of entitlement mentality?

Are you asking for a favour or for your entitlement? If the former is the case, why are you complaining to the point of involving journalists? If the later is the case, I will not condemn your involvement of journalists here.

Did you sign a contract agreement with her before you started the job, was your monthly salary of N50,000 and your contribution of N5,000 to the BRECAN part of the agreement? If yes, What you are asking for is favour and you have no legal case against her. In this case, you should face the consequences of your ass-licking mentality without complaining.

If you didn't sign any agreement regarding your monthly salary of N50,000 or you did but your contribution to the BRECAN was not part of the agreement, your entitlement in this case will be a refund of all the money you contributed to the BRECAN.

If you signed an agreement that stated more than N50,000 as your monthly salary and no compulsory donation to the BRECAN, you have every right to drag her to the point of involving journalists.

But on a moral ground, the ex first lady should apply the golden rule in dealing with her aids.

This is what you get when you have a sense of entitlement. Nobody forced you into signing the contract to work for the woman.

Sometimes, politicians employ loads of people they don't need as a way of creating jobs in their state. Former CRS Governor Ben Ayade had 38k aides. Funnily enough, those people take those jobs with high expectations without offering any services - I am working for the first lady/governor. grin

If the journalist could interview Madam Betty, you would probably hear an entirely different thing. People never tell their stories so you can find them guilty; they always want to win pity and empathy.

This is entitlement mentality.

The only thing they owe you is the forced monthly deduction for an NGO you were not compelled to donate to.

See as she is maligning the former First Lady who is no longer in a position to help her.

If her own private enterprise was better than what the 1st lady offered her monthly for many years, wouldn't she have quit and returned to it long ago?

Instead, she waited till the very last day of Akeredolu's grip on power, and now thinks she should be compensated.

Everyone needs support. Betty is going through alot of tough phases at the moment.
She didn't just lose her husband, she also lost her position. She's needs emotional support at the moment.

What I don't see as proper is the 5000 deduction from your salary to fund her personal ambition. But I understand you won't be able to complain because of her initial status.

If you are fortunate enough for her daughter to consider helping you with 4 million, I hope it happens. That should change your situation.
It's not easy being inbetween jobs with no strong support in 9ja

Every office does that but they call it pension fund. Many don't get it back after retirement. However, that is a bad thing that should be addressed by our laws.

If she had centered her interview on the 5000, she would have had a massive support. But coming to expect an addition to your salary after you have been relieved of your job sound like a mental disorder.

To a normal nigerian, nothing is wrong with her thinking faculty because most are held up in that mental slavery. Giving tips in a taboo in a good work environment.

What kind of entitlement mentality is this? So after being gainfully employed and paid a salary that you accepted and received consistently for 7 years, is she now supposed to take care of you for life? I want to believe she also had several other aids. So she is supposed to cater for all her assistants for life even when they were paid their due salaries. I don't really understand this. Looks more like a smear campaign.

A proposal of 4 million to the daughter of her boss! It's wise to scale it down and regrow her business over time. In terms of settlement after service, her salary would not have earned her 4m in terms of gratuity.

Coming to SM may not be a good move since they're not legally bound to pay except it is so indicated in her terms of employment. She should confirm if payments were made on her behalf to PENCOM towards pension payment as provided by the law (conditions and terms apply). That may provide some funds for her.

I think it’s the reason why locals resisted the idea of another Igbo First Lady in yorubaland through OSUN

Mrs Adeleke the Igbo first wife should be First Lady. Betty killed her chances most likely
