Propaganda can only get you so far

The girls (In no particular order), Immaculate Ikegwuonu, Camilla Anyadike, and Nweke-Nonso Oluchi.

Girls of St. John Vianney Science College, Igbariam, Anambra State, have used their virtual reality project to win the National Girls in ICT Competition 2024, claiming the national championship title on Wednesday.

The National Girls in ICT Competition, organised by the Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, is a technology innovation competition for all girls in secondary schools across Nigeria.

The college’s innovative project, M-Tag VR, allows users to explore iconic landmarks like Zuma Rock and learn about the fascinating cultural aspects of Nigerian tribes.

The girls, Immaculate Ikegwuonu, Camilla Anyadike, and Nweke-Nonso Oluchi, mentored by their coach, John Onuigbo, triumphed over teams from all 36 states of the federation.

The girls started the competition at the state level, where they won the Anambra State competition, then proceeded to conquer the South-Eastern regional championship, defeating teams from Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, and Enugu states, to make it to the national finals.

The organisers said their exceptional project and skills impressed judges throughout, culminating in a thrilling national victory against strong contenders from the six geopolitical zones of the country.

Rivers and Lagos states secured the second and third-place positions, respectively.

Speaking on Thursday, one of the girls, Immaculate Ikegwuonu, expressed excitement, saying, “We are so grateful for this opportunity! Thanks to our school which motivates us to pursue careers in ICT. Through this win, we hope to inspire other girls to do the same.”

Reacting to the win, The Director of St. John Vianney Science College, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, with joy, said, “This national championship is a monumental achievement for our school and a source of immense pride. It exemplifies our commitment to empowering young women in STEM fields.

“As a science college, we understand the impact of technology and empower students to use it as a force for good. Hence, this win isn’t coming as a surprise. It’s the result of years of hard work.

“This victory is a testament to the dedication and talent of these young girls. We are glad to have been part of their journey. They have not only showcased their technical skills but also their ability to innovate and problem-solve.”

The Operations Lead of Kodex Africa, Idika Ukpai, said the National Girls in ICT Competition is facilitated through implementing hubs in each state, which provide logistical support and ensure a smooth competition process. Kodex Africa supported this team from Anambra State.

That was a reply to "Anambra na their papa" post.

Schools from several states in Nigeria win competitions all the time. There is nothing special about Anambra than other states of the federation .

Someone posted up there a school in Ogun state that won an International maths competition (World maths competition).

Imo State used to be the leader in education in Nigeria but bad leadership has taken the state back by 100 years - thanks to Association of Past Criminals (APC) and the Supreme Court. Now, Anambra State is miles ahead of every other state in Nigeria. Congratulations to the girls!
