favour32:I do not have problem with the rest, but choir, why did it sound contrary to church, chair, chain? The first time I saw the spelling, I called it "ch-ior" as in 'church'. I embarrassed myself. Thank God it's my sister alone was there |

A lot but why would the word "University" start with U instead of Y since the first syllable sounds Y to eliminate confusion about the use of articles A and An ? |

tunde1200: The Answer is "Force" and technology. They all could Write down their languages with their own letters. They all had paper, pencil, pen, gunpower (for bullets), and expert metal working skills to make weapons for war, swords, spear, armour They all had horses for mechanised labour and carrying their soldiers to the battlefield. Steam Engine trains, Bicycles, ... machines. All three languages you mentioned had Empires and fought bloody wars, using all these technologies, to Force their languages on others. Without local homegrown technology, you are not a nation in anyway. They collected almost all of Africa and pushed us aside. British Empire travelled around the world to colonise other countries and force English into their mouths. Russia had Tzars, Communism and others to expand their boundaries and conquer as much of Europe as possible. China had Dynasties and Communism and Forceful rulers. We Nigeria are a collection of very small tribes and villages that were very quickly overpowered by for the weapons of the British. Imagine to the extent that they said, white men showed us umbrella and mirror as gifts and we were so delighted that we sold off our brothers to them in slavery. (Till TODAY, we're still relying HEAVILY on imported goods. EVEN our own petrol is STILL being imported because we can't make ANYTHING. - Nigeria has tried tirelessly to be united. Without Nigeria's Army, we don't have any joint forces of all the local tribes to fight off any invaders. It is the British that made Nigeria Army for us and left us to manage ourselves with it. We're actively STILL fighting ourselves EVEN RIGHT HERE, TILL NOW on Nairaland DAILY!!! How can such disorganised group of people ever get one coherent language? Each of our tribes is too small to dominate. So we just fight each other instead. Unfortunately, English is the only language that works for Nigeria. If Tinubu starts speaking Yoruba on TV to address Nigerians, the country will immediately divide and fall appart. He has to speak English, So did Buhari, And Jonathan, And Yar-Adua, Shonekan, Obasanjo, Abacha, Babangida, Shagari.... 1 Like |
