IFEANYI UBAH-LED SENATE AD-HOC COMMITTEE ON TURN AROUND MAINTENANCE (TAM) PAYS OVERSIGHT VISIT TO KADUNA REFINING AND PETROCHEMICAL COMPANY (KRPC)

In a bold move to reduce dependence on imported petroleum products and strengthen energy security, in line with the renewed hope initiative of the Ahmed Bola Tinubu-led administration, the Nigerian government quietly launched an ambitious initiative aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in locally refined petroleum products.

The leadership of the 10th Senate, in alignment with this initiative, set up an ad-hoc committee chaired by the Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District, Senator Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, CON with the mandate to commence an investigative oversight of Nigeria's refineries, in order to assess the effectiveness of the ongoing efforts at leveraging technology, promoting innovation, and fostering partnerships to overcome existing challenges and unlock the sector's full potential.

Accompanied by other members of the ad-hoc committee, key stakeholders and experts in the energy sector, including staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Senator Ubah arrived at the KADUNA REFINING AND PETROCHEMICALS COMPANY, KRPC, in Kaduna metropolis with a comprehensive agenda aimed at assessing the current operational status, identifying challenges, and exploring potential solutions to enhance efficiency and productivity.

The Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical, which has an overall refining capacity of 110,000 barrels per day, has not had a turnaround maintenance in the last 16 years. Speaking during the visit, the managing director of the Kaduna refinery, Dr Mustafa Sugungun, assured the committee that efforts are ongoing to bring the refinery to 60% nominal capacity by December 2024

Senator Ubah lamented the decades of neglect, inefficiency and underutilization of crude oil refineries in the country. Despite being blessed with abundant crude oil reserves, the country has continued to rely heavily on costly imports to meet its domestic demand for gasoline, diesel, and other petroleum products.
The Senator gave accolades to the visionary leadership style of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu GCFR and expressed great optimism in his ability to turn around the fortunes of the country for good.

The Senate Ad-hoc Committee will turn in the report of their oversight visits later, outlining their findings, recommendations, and proposed action plan for addressing the challenges facing the refineries in order to help the drive towards achieving self-sufficiency in locally refined petroleum products in Nigeria as soon as possible.
