The topic says it all I just want to know if we still have people who would want thier body to be used for science experiment when they die. As for me I think I would want that but I haven't concluded yet. I mean if your body gets buried it will still decay so instead of wasting a useful body why not give to science? I think you'll be paid for it too, but that's not what I'm looking at. Would you want your body to be used for science experiments when you die? Is not bad don't think of it as ''lab rat''  . And if you wouldn't can you kindly give a reason. |

I don't want my remains to be used for anything after I'm gone. When the time comes I should be left to "travel" undisturbed into the hearafter. Nothing should disturb that process. I have read gory accounts of what happened to some people's body parts donated to science and I think many people do not understand what the process of dying really is - including the scientists! |

So if your innards are eaten by dogs, how will that affect you after you're dead. When I die, I lose possession of my body. I won't even get to attend my burial. So while it's mine, if it could do something after Im gone, wth? Feel free scientists. |

Natasha,,: It all sounds noble to leave one’s remains to science or donate it to those in need of organ replacements. A well intentioned move no doubt but like I said earlier the entire process of death is not fully understood by science and so there are many questionable and ethical practices involved. If you are of the view that during death the union between soul and body is severed then certain questions arise in the case of organ donation. Who decides when death has occurred especially because not everyone (even scientists!!!) agrees when "death" occurs. Does it happen when the heart and lungs stop, when the entire brain ceases to have activity, or just when the "higher functions" stop? This is an important issue, because no one wants to take organs from someone still "alive," but waiting for "whole brain death" can leave many organs unusable.1 Another question that no one asks is whether this has any effect in the aforementioned process of severing of the union between body and soul. We are seeing this process only from this side but is the soul which may have not transitioned completely be affected by all of this meddling? It is for these reasons and others that I prefer that when the times comes for me I should be left to die in peace -and not harvested for my body parts. |

Nope, what I meant was after you're dead, some dogs eat your corpse, would it affect you? I wasn't referring to a violent death. I can say with 100% certainty that the dead person is unaffected by what is done to the body. |

^ The crux of the matter here is the time in which "real" death is said to occur, i.e the time when the soul has completely left the body. If after many weeks or months the remains of a dead person is eaten by dogs or even the process of decomposition sets such happenings will(hopefully) be immune to the soul because that connection between body and soul no longer exists. But should the dying person still be alive when such things happen then you can be sure that the pains and effects will be felt by him/her!!! Many of us imagine that the process of death is immediate and instant but that is not always the case. And this fact poses a serious problem for organ donations. Who can say for sure that death has completely set in and when exactly should the organs - that are needed alive!!- be taken from the body and given to those in need? Talk about grey areas. Thanatology is a relatively new science and many of us will do well to read up about it. |

Lol, it probably depends on your belief. What I believe is when I die, I'm gone. Heaven or hell doesn't matter to me in this world. I believe in making this world a better place to live in. I believe that like all other animals, we have a duration. But I also believe we are not higher animals with the power of choice for no reason. When I'm dead, my body is useless to me. For those who believe in spirits and souls, it means The owner has departed. What's the point of living a house to rot, if you realise that you wouldn't be using it anymore? Wouldn't you turn it to a shelter or something? That's the way I view my body (and all other property I currently own). So if my body could be used for medical sciences, then no problem. If the doctors decide to sell off the body parts, that's their problem or whomever I make custodian of my body. After all, I won't be able to complain or whine about its handling. |

Our discussion is turning towards the philosophical I, like any sane-headed individual, am for the progress of science and medicine but as it stands now I am not convinced that the gains from organ donation (where the donor is deceased) is wholesome. By wholesome I mean both the recipient and the donor are not shortchanged. Just because I want to help some other person doesn't mean I should expose myself to undue (and in most cases undisclosed) harm. The body parts that are needed for transplant are needed alive yet I must be dead first then add to this the uncertainty of the true moment of death and you see the horror that many unknowingly sign up for. |

hmm Baws wetin na? why are you confusing me? when you're dead, you're dead, that why you're dead true the organs are needed alive but it doesn't change the fact that you're dead at least its medically confirmed. How long does it take for the soul to leave the body? what ever happens to your body here or earth cannot affect your soul, If it can are you then saying those who were burnt alive their soul died with them? or their soul didn't leave their body? BTW are you a doc or something? |
