Why Is The Centre For Yoruba Culture In Lagos Named After John Randle? by withSajweb: 9:42am On May 01
Dr. John Randle, after whom the center is named, was a prominent Lagosian. Born in Sierra Leone in 1855, he had Nigerian roots, as his father hailed from Oyo.

Dr. Randle received formal medical training at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and became the fourth qualified African medical practitioner in the Lagos colony. He left the colonial service to set up a successful medical practice in Lagos and actively engaged in politics, advocating for native rights and benefits.

Why Name the Centre after Him?

While Dr. John Randle himself was not Yorùbá by name, his contributions to Lagos and his passion for native rights align with the center's mission.

Naming the center after him recognizes his legacy and the intersection of cultures in Lagos. It's a way to honor a Lagosian who fought for the same rights and benefits enjoyed by British doctors, while also celebrating Yoruba culture and history.
