From this video, it seems Maersk officials (if those indeed are Maersk officials ) did make a verbal commitment to invest at some point. But it appears this was prior to the Riyadh summit - and anything could have happened between the meeting with Minister Doris and the Riyadh summit. The question is: what did Maersk executives and BAT discuss in Riyadh?

There is a disturbing pattern here. We had the India multi billion dollar 'deal', the emirates visa 'deal', the Qatar 'deal' and now we have this. Faced with serious domestic economic turmoil, the BAT administration is desperate for a win, for any win at all. This desperation is leading to serious, costly blunders.

This was exactly how the administration's officials went to town some months back with news about the AFREXIM facility before the deal was done...Nigerians woke up to noisy press releases by their government about such a major transaction - and yet AFREXIM itself had absolutely no information about the transaction on its regular news channels.

This is not the way to run an economy. To hastily announce these business 'deals' before securing a firm, irrevocable commitmment from counterparties is proving extremely foolish. At the risk of being accused of using inelegant language - I would describe this rush to announce these business deals (before actually finishing them) as some deadly, perverse form of premature (business) ejaculation.

All sides (both Maersk and the FG) will now dig in and pull out all the stops to ensure maximum damage control. Who loses in the end?
