Vitamin A deficiencies are a major contributor to preventable blindness around the world, especially in developing countries with high levels of malnutrition. One of the first signs of vitamin A deficiency is difficulty seeing in poor light conditions.

Vitamin A plays a vital role in the vision cycle: it helps the body produce rhodopsins, a pigment found in the eye’s retina that aids in low-light vision. When vitamin A is low, the body’s ability to regenerate rhodopsins is compromised, resulting in poor night vision that can make daily activities difficult and dangerous.

Fortunately, vitamin A supplements and dietary interventions are effective in preventing and treating night blindness. Public health efforts to improve nutrition and make vitamin A supplements available to at-risk groups have also helped to reduce the incidence of night blindness.
