Five Israeli soldiers have been murdered in Gaza, according to the military, in one of the worst instances since the conflict began in October.

According to Israeli media, the servicemen were killed after being inadvertently targeted by Israeli tank fire.

It happened in Jabalia, northern Gaza, where Israeli soldiers are fighting Hamas militants.

Troops returned to the town last week after earlier withdrawing out, claiming Hamas had reassembled there.

Tens of thousands of residents have evacuated Jabalia since Saturday, when the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) commenced air attacks. Troops returned to Jabalia on Monday.

Fighting there and in the southern town of Rafah, where almost half of Gaza's civilian population of 2.3 million had sought refuge, has escalated in recent days.

According to the UN, 600,000 Palestinians have evacuated Rafah, and another 100,000 have been displaced as a result of renewed violence in the north.

The five Israeli soldiers murdered in Jabalia on Wednesday all belonged to the 202nd Battalion of the Paratroopers Brigade.

According to Israeli media, the IDF is probing why they were hit by tank fire.

However, an early investigation revealed that the troops had taken a structure in the Jabalia refugee camp, several of yards away from Israeli tanks stationed in the region.

The tanks recognized a weapon in the structure and fired two shells at it, according to the report.

The tank fire also injured seven additional troops, three of whom were seriously injured.
