Those who think boko haram will "fizzle out" are not up-to-date with the current state of Islamic fundamentalism world-wide. Boko haram has links with al-qaeda; al-qaeda's leaders have always maintained that their enemies are the West and Christians; alqaeda is firmly rooted in violence with a long history of "success' in most of their "projects"; al-qaeda has never fizzled out in any of the regions where it has established links with local allies. So, one wonders from what hindsight such optimism emanates. A careful analysis of messages preached by many Islamic clerics would reveal a major defect which is primarily responsible for the distortions that have given rise to the present-day fanatical violence: the failure to allocate time-relevance to Quranic interpretations. For example, chapter 4 verse 95 of the Quran reads; "Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and receive no hurt, and those who strive and fight in the cause of God with their goods and their persons. God hath granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than to those who sit (at home). Unto all (in Faith) Hath God promised good: But those who strive and fight hath He distinguished above those who sit (at home) by a special reward".

The time and environment in which this was relevant no longer exists, yet many Islamic preachers can't (dare?) tell their flocks that that statement was made in the days of primitive and murderous attacks against the followers of Prophet Mohammed who were actually out to introduce and establish the "concept" of one undivided, most powerful and most compassionate God to the Arabs world, a concept he, Mohammed, accepted as true during the course of His interactions with the Jews. For such preachers, every verse in the Quran is ALIVE and applicable at all times and in all situations. No wonder, thousands of hungry and ill-informed "followers" move to foreign lands where it is possible to " fight and die for the cause of Allah and His messengers" so that they can get "special rewards". Until such misconceptions are removed by the muslim Ummah, a very tedious task indeed, boko harm is likely to remain with us for as long as those whole don't have the courage or wisdom to question some ambiguous interpretations of the Quran allow them to flourish in their backyard.

wow ,i wonder how many of you posting replies here have being to geidam,the town is more or less like a village that is complete disconnected from any other major town(u understd the miliatry rules,they just give any landmask in the north a LGA).
I have spend a nite in that town and it was like hell on earth with a one out of thousand iboto hausa ratio doing bussines.who would sell boost in that town, what a hell of a town ! poverty ridden town,with funny looking people chad,niger and only God know where easle ,all of them wearing turban,jumpers .

Most of the contributors on Boko Haram issue are not aware of the genesis of the crisis they only knew when it has degenerated to bombings and mass killings.  The major reason that led us here is simple crisis management at its inception.  A stich in time they say saves nine.

1. Way back before their leader was killed, about nineteen members of the sect were arrested, riding bikes without helment, they reused to be given corporal punishment. subsequently they were killed (at point of arrest). This led to serious unrest in Borno which led to the arrest of their leader.

2. Their leader was arrested by soldiers and handed over (alive, hale and hearty)  to the police who, few days after, killed him on the pretense that he wanted to escape.  Visuals of the man's body showed him in handcuffs. 

3. Several people were arrested and were selected (in twos and threes) and killed while the rest watch and wait for their turn.  Aljazeera showed clips of these atrocities in of their reports. Many people became their sympathizers after watching the documentary or knowing what became of their loved ones in the hands police.

My take: 
Even if one is caught committing murder, I expect the law enforcer to use law in dealing with him/her.  Two wrongs, they say, don't not make a right.
Given that the deed has been done what has the authority done to those officers who carried out the extra judicial killings?  Even if action has been taken they should let the people know. This might placate them and the revenge missions could be stopped.
We can still correct the anormaly if we are sincere.  Dont let us look at it as a political, religious or tribal issue but rather to open-up say the truth and do the right thing at the right time.  God bless Nigeria!

You got it wrong; boko haram started as 'The Nigeria Talibans' and attacked the police station and bank in Bama, and the police barracks in Gwoza before the issue of helmets came up. Even the deaths recorded during the helmets incidence were caused by attempt by the sect members to disarm the police, in which many policemen sustained serious injuries. The truth is that initial sympathy exhibited in favour of the group by most Muslims in the north encouraged the group and, largely, obscured any harm suffered by security agents in such clashes. It is only now that even Muslims have become their targets that a general outcry is ringing out from there. Extra-judicial killings, though condemnable, has nothing to do with the principles that informed the group to carry arms against the state; they only use that to still attract some level of sympathy from ambivalent individuals, or groups.

Neither empathy nor sympathy in you? Beside that, they aren't only killing themselves many outside their faith, and even atheists, may have died in those attacks. It's rather a sad and horrible human defect.
