[b]One October evening in 1956, a group of spectators remaining in the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City, to watch the last finisher of the marathon. An hour before, Mamo Wolde of Ethopia, had won d race. It was getting coldand dark, and d remaining spectators began 2 leave when suddenly they heard d sound of sirens & police whistles coming into d stadium. As they watched in amazement, one last runner made his way on to d track 4 d last lap of the 26-mile race. It was John Stephen Akitwari, of Tanzania.
  As he ran the 400-metre circuit, people could see that his leg was bandaged & bleeding. He had fallen & injured it during d race, but he refused to let it stop him!
  Suddenly, d people in d satdium rose, some in tears, and applauded without stopping until he crossed d finish line. As he hobbled away, he was asked why he had not quit since he had no chance of winning a medal. He said, "My country did not send me 2 Mexico City 2 start d race, they sent me here 2 finish it!'
    What a Character!!! John Stephen Akitwari looked beyond d pain of d moment & kept his eyes on d purpose 4 which he was there despite d fact that he knew it has already slipped 4rm him!

A clear case of misplaced patriotic zeal. Sports is just entertainment and equating sports excellence to the love of one's country has always been the bane of 3rd world countries. I wish such patriotic zeal shown in sports by Africans can be applied to human endeavors that actually impact people's life.
