Or Tambo International Airport Wins The 2011 Best Airport Africa Award by lanrewajew(m): 3:07pm On Dec 05, 2011
For the first time in the World Airport Awards, OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg (formerly known as Johannesburg International Airport) has been named the Best Airport Africa, pushing the previous winner Cape Town International Airport into 2nd place. The airport is one of the 100 busiest in the world and in 2010, the airport handled 8.82 million departing passengers.

"This award signifies yet another important milestone for the airport just months after South Africa successfully hosted the Fifa 2010 World Cup," said the airport's general manager Christopher Hlekane.

1. OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg

OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) in Johannesburg is the air transport hub of Southern Africa, catering for more than 17 million passengers each year. With more than 18,000 people employed by various companies at ORTIA, the airport plays a vital role in the city's and Gauteng province's economy, and boasts an impressive infrastructure that has expanded by thousands of square metres from its modest origins. In October 2006 the country’s flagship airport was renamed as a tribute to one of the new South Africa’s most important founding fathers. Oliver Reginald Tambo, fondly known as O.R. by his peers, is renowned in South Africa and abroad for his significant contribution to the liberation of South Africa. He was president of the African National Congress (ANC) for 30 years and spent much of this time in exile, mobilising international support for the ANC and opposition to the apartheid movement. “There is no one more deserving of such an accolade than Mr Tambo and ACSA is honoured that our flagship airport, our international gateway, has been chosen to bear his name as a tribute to him,” says Monhla Hlahla, ACSA’s Managing Director.

2. Cape Town International Airport

It is also Africa’s premier tourist and VIP destination and has established a reputation as Africa’s premier international award-winning airport, consistently performing among the best in the world for service in its category. The terminal building has a split-level design, with departures located in the upper floors and arrivals in the lower floors. All check-in takes place within the Central Terminal Building. The terminal contains 10 air bridges, split between domestic and international usage. Retail within the terminal building is located on the upper level above the departures level. The terminal also has a viewing deck, located on the upper level.

3. King Shaka International Airport

King Shaka International Airport, also known as La Mercy Airport is the primary airport serving Durban, South Africa. Located at La Mercy, approximately 35 kilometres (22 mi) north of the city centre of Durban, it opened its doors to passengers on May 1, 2010. The airport is named after Shaka, leader of the Zulu nation in the early 19th century.
