Explosion causes deaths, panic in Kaduna
on DECEMBER 7, 2011 · in NEWS

KANO - (AFP) – An explosion killed an unclear number of people and caused panic in the northern city of Kaduna on Wednesday, residents and police said, but initial indications showed it was accidental.

“Initially, we thought it was a bomb blast, but our preliminary assessment has shown that it was an accidental explosion from a repair shop dealing in car batteries and gas cylinders,” police spokesman Aminu Lawan said.

“The explosion has led to some deaths and injuries.”

A spokesman for the national emergency management agency said the scene was littered with mangled body parts that were being collected by rescue workers, but he could give no estimate on the number of dead.

Kaduna, located in the mainly Muslim north, has been on edge since being hit by some of the worst rioting following April presidential elections won by President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south.

Residents reported that the blast occurred in an area of the city mainly populated by Christian Igbos.

“There was an explosion from a gas cylinder in one of the spare parts shops in the area and rumours went round the city that there was a bomb attack in the area,” Abdullahi Ibrahim, an iron vender, said by phone.

“Because the area is largely populated by Christian Igbo traders dealing in spare parts and refrigerators, people thought the explosion was targeted at them. There was panic in some parts of the city …”

Another resident gave a similar account.

Three days of riots across the north immediately following April’s presidential elections killed more than 800 people, according to rights groups.

The north has also been hit in recent months by scores of bomb blasts and shootings blamed on the Islamist sect known as Boko Haram.

That's very sad. Funny that none of the posters have empathised with the victims; it's all matter-of-fact statements. Accidents/tragedy has become so commonplace in Naija that it no longer pulls at our heartstrings.

Well, the perpetrators and their co-planners will only get three years in jail if caught. Human life is cheap in Nigeria as testified by our rulers behaviour.

God look after us all, as it appears that there are no Angels left in Nigeria.

Ribadu said that suicide bombers are rebels so what do you expect. We shall wait and hear the true account of things. I don't trust the police on a good day. In matters like Boko Haram, you can never trust an hausa/fulani officer to admit that it is a bomb but somehow even BH will soon claim responsibility if they're behind it cos terrorist take pride in their accomplishments.
Re: Explosion In Kaduna. 15 Killed by Mkpotu(m): 3:20pm On Dec 07, 2011
@Splashbaby, there is no need for any revolution. Are you that cheap, if you concede to revolution what it means is that the agenda/motive behind the people causing all these mayhem is achieved. They are causing mayhem in order to discredit Jonathan and give impression that Northerners are the rightful people to occupy the position.

BREAKING NEWS: Over 7 feared dead in Kaduna explosion

At least 7 people died and many others were injured after an explosion this morning in Kaduna.

Witnesses say 2 men riding on a motorcycle hurled an object which detonated shortly after they drove away around 9:30am into a shop located at No. 32, Ogbomoso road, near Ori Apata in the central area of Kaduna. However, Police Commissioner Ballah M. Nasarawa denies that it was a bomb, saying that items from within shop must have caused the explosion.

According to the owner of the shop, Sunday Anigubo, his younger brother and three others whom he identified as Onyeka, Egbuka and an unnamed Hausa boy were among those in the shop when the explosion happened.

Sunday denied that any item in the shop could have caused the explosion as he only sells spare parts of Peugeot vehicles and lorries.

A crowd of close to 500 have converged at the scene of the incident and a police helicopter has been deployed, hovering above and conducting 'aerial patrol.'

The wounded are being taken to Rakiya Specialist Hospital, near Magajin Gari.

A total of ten shops were burnt in the ensuing blaze. Rescue efforts are continuing at the moment of filing in this report.

This will not be the first time the authority have tried to pretend an act of terrorism is something else. Successful terrorist acts is bad for their image - not that they have an image worth protecting.

Ten killed as bomb blast rocks Kaduna

An early morning bomb blast yesterday killed about ten people and injured several others in Kaduna while a pregnant woman lost two of her children.

This is happening barely a day after northern leaders converged on Kaduna to deliberate on the rising insecurity in the region

The incident which occurred around 9o'clock at Oriapata , a business area of the metropolis destroyed several motor spare parts shops and residential buildings.

A spare parts dealer, Ebere Uzochukwu whose shop was completely razed down told NEXT that the explosion was perpetrated by two men suspected to be suicide bombers who came with the explosive inside a carton on a motor cycle and threw it inside one of the shops.

Uzochukwu narrated that the two men who are in the mid 40s parked their motor cycle and stood in front of one of the shops before the device exploded. According to him, one of the bombers died instantly while the other was badly injured.

‘The explosive device which presumably was being taken to an unknown destination by the suspected bombers was planted inside a carton, and they were yet to reach their destination before it exploded five times", Uzochukwu said.

He said that the explosion was so heavy that the chucked off head of one of the dead persons was found 100 meters away from the scene of the incident while so many were trapped inside the building.

According to him, the reason there were so many deaths was due to the five generators in one of the shops which aggravated the fire that burnt the three boys in that shop to death.

Some of the Traders and residents of Oriapata and Katsina road areas said they heard the sound of the explosion around 9am , and shortly after the blast , all the shops around the scene caught fire which destroyed so many shops.

He disclosed that he lost goods worth over seven million naira in the incident, but added that his escape from the fire attack was a miracle.

Ikenna Okoro , a shop owner who witnessed the blast said he saw about five corpses evacuated by the men of Nigerian Red Cross and State Emergency Agency during the fire incident which lasted for over two hours.
‘One of the victims has three boys serving him, and the three boys are yet to be rescued', said Okoro

Executive Secretary of SEMA , Dogo Makama who was on ground with his men to salvage the situation said he was yet to get the accurate figure if the casualties , even as he said that the agency will make a public statement as soon as the figures are known.

As at the time of filing this report, officers and men of the state operation yaki security outfit, and other security agencies have cordoned off the area while the search and rescue team of the Nigerian Red Cross, NEMA and SEMA are still searching for more casualties inside the affected buildings.

Meanwhile the state Commissioner of Police Mr. Bala Nasarawa and other security chiefs have visited the scene with a assurances to protect the affected areas.

All the injured persons have been rushed to Saint Gerald Hospital in the city centre and are still in critical condition.

Being anything else carries no respect. Anyway, I would rather believe him , an eye witness, anyday than a "top govt official/security officer" .
