The Oodua People’s Congress has called for the convening of a Sovereign National Conference to address the problems facing the country.

The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation said  during its National Coordination Council meeting in Benin, Edo State on Tuesday SNC remained the only option to tackle the  challenges facing the country.

President of the organisation, Chief Gani Adams, who addressed members, denied that OPC  was solely founded to fight past oppressive military regimes, declaring that the “Oodua fights against any manner of injustice.”

He said, “There is no doubt that Nigeria is being confronted by many challenges that  confound its leadership.  It is our belief that nobody knows it all; you can only know what you harbour in your own mind;  but not what others think is the right thing to do.

Chief Gani Adams

“It is because of  this reason that we must look into the issue of convening a Sovereign National Conference. The SNC will enable us to explore better ways through which we  desire to live together as citizens of this  country.

“It is not just right to continue the way we are going when all can see the damage we are doing to ourselves and the country. We have so many problems, including  corruption, insecurity, epileptic power supply and investors apathy and  yet we are reluctant to do what is proper.

“Any government that does not have organisations that serve as a watchdog could be bereft of ideas.”

He said the Benin  meeting was to create awareness about the organisation and “reawaken its culture of identity.”

For the umpteenth time. When will others lend their voices to this call?

We've heard from MMN and MEND ( at least a faction). The rest?

Nigeria is a giant with a feet of clay, too afraid to take bold steps. We would rather take piecemeal actions that doesn't get us anywhere. I am sure we will have this conference, we are only postponing what is inevitable.

But Boko-aram does not represent the wills and interest of the hausas. It is these do or die politicians who are sponsoring boko-haram.

The issue is complex than OPC. Although, Fulani/Hausas are now killing non-hausa all over the country. Middle belt (Benue Fulani attack yesterday).

They want to instill fear in other ethnic groups, so that they can continue their dictatorship they have being enjoying since Babangida, Abacha time. But other ethnic group needs to give them a deterrent blow.

Call it "genocide" or any name , any available Fulani village and their cattles in the south should be cleaned. They will learn from it.

But if you people sit down and cry fish everyday. They will be happy to do more. Their objective is to make u fear them, and they are meeting it.

Of course he won't and honestly he can't not even a president from the south-east. Not even a coalition of say ACN and any other because whatever system brought them in will resist such change. What the government can do is to buy courage and devolve some of its powers as enumerated by Mikeansy.

The magnitude of change that a SNC will trigger is something that can only come from without - the people and get to the courts through the closest representation of federalism, the national assembly. Forget the executive if that is we infer as government. It is not in their interest. Federal steals states resources and powers, states steal those of local government, LGA's steal council funds and the councils steal from us,

With the exception of a revolution change will not come from those with vested interest let us not look that way. We only need to drive a wedge between the executive and legislature and bring the latter to our side. This is the only peaceful way.

Since the FG failed all of us this group are still needed to check balance the treat from the north. The FG could no longer protect lives and properties of its people.
