Jamaican Reggae Star, Luciano, Stoned In Port Harcourt by Gekko(m): 5:23pm On Dec 21, 2011

Did this really happen in PH? i mean come on!  this is unreal.  if u were involved in this melee then clap for yourself for a fine display of crass behavior.

did these peeps in PH for once imagine what if a Nigerian artist was welcomed in the same manner in Jamaica.  Luciano is a positive, conscious reggae artist, if
you don't like the music why not just leave. smh

Written by Chukwudi Akasike

JAMAICAN reggae icon, Luciano, was on Saturday night pelted with empty water bottles by some youths that attended the closing of the 2011 Rivers State Carnival popularly known as CARNIRIV at the Liberation Stadium.

Luciano, whose real name is Jepther McClymont, was invited by the consultant handling this year’s cultural festival as the star artiste to perform at the event.

Though the music fans, who streamed to the stadium, had earlier been entertained by some Nigerian artistes that included Ras Kimono, Maleke and I Go Save, a few of them were, however, not comfortable with Luciano’s reggae music.

Not ready to listen to the lyrics and rhythm of the Jamaican-born reggae idol, they resorted to throwing empty water bottles at him.

Luciano, who was shocked at the hostile attitude of the crowd, asked, "What is happening? You don’t want me? I was told that CARNIRIV is an event to showcase African Culture and that is why I am here for you.

"I am a messenger of God; don’t you want the message. I was in Ethiopia, they (Ethiopians) received me. I was in Gambia, they received me. Why won’t you receive your brother?"

The reggae maestro immediately sang his popular track, One way Ticket to Africa, to appease the crowd. But those who appeared not to be in love with the Luciano’s reggae genre of music continued to pelt him with objects.

He eventually left the stage after the rendition of another track, Sweep Over My Soul, before the Nigeria twin artistes, P-Square, were welcomed to the stage with an ovation.

Port-Harcourt is the worst place for foriegn artists to visit. Its the same port-harcourt that someone jumped on stage and snatched Usher Raymonds bling from his neck.

The last time Port-Harcourt recieve a foreign artist with love was when Wyclef visited. And ofcourse marijuana was allowed at that show.

Na some dem dey behave. Majority of Ikwerre youths are very unwelcoming of strangers and that is why they never progress into anything meaningful except building houses that a dog cannot live in and working as touts, harassing people for radio license and sanitation receipt.

Never seen a more narrow minded people in my life.

That's what you get when you show some love to bush people. If you don't like the guy or his music, ignore him or leave the place, ahn ahn! Must some people hsow their damn ignorance?

Am feeling for the guy o. This is probably his last visit to Naija as a whole, not just PH.

And some people say peeps in Lag lack civilization!
Re: Jamaican Reggae Star, Luciano, Stoned In Port Harcourt by hardywaltz(m): 12:37pm On Dec 23, 2011
Well the audience are the ones paying his bills so if they don't want to hear his song so be it, I was @ the Carnival and felt a little bit embarrassed when the crowd started clapping and shouting 'Go GO Go Awayyy' or something like that. The organizer must have learnt from dis not to bring foreign artist.
But I also think the PH crowd just have funny behavior coz back in 2004 Rugged Man (in his peak) was a star artist for an Occasion in RSUST, we waited till 2am for him to turn up while  other artists like Stone code and co entertained the crowd; well Rugged Man finally appeared by 2:30am and just 3mins into songs they started booing him and b4 u could say jack the entire students in the arena stood up and left; he tried lobbying the students back with a promise of giving them free cd's yet they refused, 1 even told him to his face to Bleep off. So I would advice artist to be very careful b4 mounting the stage. The only Artist I have seen PH crowd accept whole heatedly was dat thug that sang Sample - Ekwe (Stereo Man).

Anyway, since Luciano's hit song of 1995 "It's Me Again Jah", he has faded into oblivion. Why bring a Jamaican artiste when there are hundreds of Naija artistes waiting for recognition?

However, still not a justification for throwing stuff at him, though this was a way to show displeasure at shows in America in years gone by.
Re: Jamaican Reggae Star, Luciano, Stoned In Port Harcourt by naijacutee(f): 12:58pm On Dec 23, 2011
I support hefty ticket prices to foreign artist shows in Nigeria as a filtering measure. It's not by force to see them.
Re: Jamaican Reggae Star, Luciano, Stoned In Port Harcourt by gidson12(m): 12:59pm On Dec 23, 2011
well, it happens anywhere even outside the shores of naija, if the audience or crowd finds your delivery bellow their taste, they must react in some way, nobody is ready to come to a show or concert in high spirit and be dissapointed, i wonder why they even invited him in the first place when we have much tallented artist to grace the occasion, dont blame the crowd they simply do not enjoy his music

And I hope ppl trying to justify this rude behavior are not d same ppl that will shout 'racism' if this happens to a Nigerian artist in another country.
Must we show our 'animistic' behavior in everything? I just pity the way most of us reason. It just shows why we are still where we are as a nation.

This is The reason why the people Of PH should be taken back to school and learn what we call "manner" , SIMPLE!!!

So if you don't find an artist entertaining, funny or talented and the next thing is treating him or her in this brutal way??

In fact , there shouldnt be any show hosting in that bush state "PH" henceforth!!!

This is no big deal. Flavour Nabania was recently booed in Lusaka,Zambia, when he came on stage and instead of performing his hit single 'Nwa baby' live,he chose to mime it and simply dance.
Fans will Boo you if they are not impressed by your act, simple. I dont even know this Luciano guy,i understand he's a washed up reggae artiste. We must all understand that the Nigerian music has grown really big. You can all see the loud ovation enjoyed by p square.gone are the days when fans are expected to bow to any foreign guest artistes without expecting good performance. Any foreign act coming to Naija must seek to out-perform the local artistes,R kelly did just that in 2010 Star mega jamz.  Luciano's remark that he was received in Ethiopia and Gambia or whatever,u still cant compare the music industries in those countries with Naija.
Take a washed up act like Ras kimono or Mike Okri to a [b]major concert in an advanced music country like South Africa, they may even get shot. grin

Sorry Mr luciano ,it just was not your day.
grin

Why going to Nigeria ?

Nigerians dont listen to foreign music. Because majority of them can't decipher foreign English.

That is why American songs are not popular in Nigeria.

If you can use Yoruba, Pigin, Igbo to rap, dont come.

One funny thing is majority of Nigerian rappers are singing Fuji, but they are deceiving themselves that they are singing hiphop.

They have bastardized hiphop. Someone like Nice, Brymo, Samklef e.t.c are suppose to be singing fuji.

Anyways, I dont know how the guy sang and what he sang.

can you Imagine?  peeps are actually trying to justify uncivilized behavior.  Some claim he's a washed up artist, Nigerians dont understand reggae etc
But yet most of our contemporary Nigerian artist are influenced by reggae. Yes! go back and listen to Duncan Mighty, Wiz Kid, 2face, Nneka, General Pype, M.I there
are tinges of reggae influences in their songs. Luciano may not have had a hit song in a while but neither has Beenie Man, Sean Paul, Shaggy etc but we still enjoy there music.

I play naija music to a lot of my Jamaican friends I play soccer with and they love it, they also enjoy our movies.  Show some respect to art and comport yourself in public we
are better than this.  Stop making excuses cause u sound LAME.
