In Idenmili anum nwanyi has three stages; First is iche ego,second is ibu ego and the las is igbankwu.
Iche ego; This is when the groom approaches the chic and proposes.

Ibu ego; This includes the actual introduction and paying of dowry.

Igbankwu; This is the actual grand wedding where the joining of hands takes place and the brides father gives the bride a cup of wine to go look for her husband and feed him the wine while on her knees...lol. This segment is also called "wine carrying".

Igbankwu is a traditional Igbo wedding which was invented by the Nri; Ezeagu,whites didnt introduce Igbankwu!! Yes,it has been modernized to an extent but it originated from Igboland.

After the wedding proper come the "nduna uno" and the "idu uno"...I will explain more...feel sleepy.

I wasn't saying Europeans introduced it, I was saying it may be one of those things that spread accompanying the other practices that become widespread like wearing okpu agu, or eating rice everyday. The first parts of marriage are general enough to be widespread in Igboland, the issue I have is believing the I gba nkwu wine ceremony was widespread or the same throughout Igboland. I could be wrong, but I believe different Igbo groups had their own variations of the marriage ceremony, just like the difference in their coming-of-age institutions and rituals. It's just my opinion through observing how different many of the practices among the Igbo were (or are, which is kind of fading), the igba nkwu ceremony is too specific to be followed by everyone. In fact, I've never seen anything mentioning igba nkwu in literature in the early 20th century.

it was fully in vogue then but was not known as igba nkwu. It was ime ego nwanyi or ikwu ugwo isi nwanyi. I believe the name evolved to igba nkwu because of the reservations we now have regarding paying "dowry" et all. Ime ego or ikwu ugwo isi dika a na-ere nwanyi hence the name change.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking more about the passing around the wine and main wedding, instead of the bride price and negotiations because there are other Igbo groups who do not pass wine around as a wedding. Some don't have weddings at all, just marriage.

Earlier histories were focused on kings because there was hardly any penetration of hinterland. In the late 19 century and early 20th century there are authors such as G.T. Basden and even G.I. Jones who hardly ever talk about 'kings' at all.

I get your point,mr; Igbankwu was an Anambra thing,initialy but their influences has made most Igbos to adopt the term due to its popularity but these ppl still perform their rites according to their traditions...Nothing spoil,unless if you are having sleepless night over it !
