Seems you are ignorant of the hardship this sudden hyke has caused Nigerians and you talk about decorum. Many people who travelled to their hometowns expecially east are stranded right now.

You have made the comparison and we all can see that our leaders are clueless and Crazy. Decorum my foot. They should all rot in hell forever and may their generation not see the goodness of GOD if they ever syphoned our money with this deregulation stuff. I rest my case.

It looks very much that it's the IMF urging Nigeria to doom, and of course the dummy government is trying to oblige.
I know they say people who live in poor countries generally believe in conspiracy theories, but this is too close for comfort. I guess Nigeria is of paramount attention due to our population.

Cheap fuel increases our competitive advantage compared to Western nations. We may have small minimum wage, but we have the labour force, and cheap fuel keeps the economy going. Premium priced fuel turns us into another Angola, where everything is expensive, the locals have no jobs or any kind of succor, while Western and Asian manufacturers and businesses are having a field day reaping cool profits.

Actually the population only makes the picture better for Nigerians. If a 160-million strong nation continues to produce and sell fuel for very cheap, it makes us stronger internally. We could produce cheaply for local consumption, and weaken the case for influx of foreign goods.

Which one is wrong there?
I've actually been looking at it. So far it seems accurate (at least the fuel prices do). The minimum wage and fuel price for the non-OPEC countries are the ones i am not sure of, particularly the UK. One would need the hourly rates to calculate the average monthly minimums there.
Re: Fuel Price Vs. Minimum Wage In Opec Countries Inc. Nigeria by 989900: 10:54am On Jan 06, 2012
I've personally visited or lived in all the named countries except Venezuela, Algeria, Iraq and Libya.

Those figures are not too far from the truth.

And while some people (citizens and P. residents) in those named countries may actually earn a little less than those figures, none is as near as low as what Nigeria offers (N18K) meanwhile, a great number of  Nigerians earn less than N10k monthly.

And for all the ones I've been privileged to experience, their infrastructure and social amenities are what we might not achieve even in a 100years if we DO NOT CHANGE for the better.

They all have stable power supply, efficient transport system, loan facilities, good roads, good health care system and the list is endless.

They do not necessarily need to own cars or generators to live comfortably.

I can actually give us a comprehensive comparative analysis later in the day (got a few urgent meetings to attend to).

Heaven helps those who help themselves. May God be with us all.

When we brought this analogy to the Lekki toll issue, a lot of you guys shot it down. Why is it different in this case?

You expect people not to be able to buy fuel at the new rates but think that they can go to work and pay 900 naira passing through 3 toll gates and feel it is "development".

Exploitation is exploitation whether by FG or LASG.
Re: Fuel Price Vs. Minimum Wage In Opec Countries Inc. Nigeria by COMPAQ(m): 10:59am On Jan 06, 2012
It should also be considered that most of the OPEC members listed here are middle east countries who operate "monarchies", many of whom use low fuel prices to keep their citizens "happy" in order to perpetuate themselves in power.

Also the fact that the populations of these countries is low makes it "easier" to afford the subsidy. Also, most of these countries are less corrupt, so what money there is goes around much better. And while it's easy to say that the govt is corrupt, the truth is that the average Nigerian is now (for whatever reason) inherently corrupt. All the councillors, LG chairmen, State Govs, commissioners, Ministers, Judiciary, Legislative, Executive etc have brothers, sisters, cousins, parents etc. Do we tell those we know in govt not to be corrupt? Rather we ask then to give us contracts, apply favouritsm etc

A good one on Fuel Subsidy from FELA DUROTOYE, D best argument so far,

Since I got back into Nigeria yesterday, I have heard some preposterous arguments that the removal of the fuel subsidy will be justified by wise investments that will benefit all.

My response has been, How will a wasteful government suddenly realize the genius of prudence and making the right investment decisions sim, ply bcs there is more money available from oil subsidy removal?

Will there be less graft & bribes involved in process of issuing the road contracts or power contracts?

Have we sought to honestly find every way we can plug wastage in our leaking economy before we ask a feeble populace to carry the burden of corruption and gross ineptitude of a gluttonous few?

Have the Presidency, the State & Local Governments and the Legislature discovered how to travel without a convoy of 20 cars to the airport?

Can the occupiers of these lofty positions act in honour as Barack Obama did in 2010 when he got every member of his cabinet to take a pay cut, starting with himself?

Within his first few days as British Prime Minister, David Cameron led the austerity cuts (upon his assumption) by cutting down his convoy to 2 cars and one outrider. The Members of Parliament in Britain are now only allowed 3rd class train tickets on official travel (as opposed to their traditional first class train ticket allowances). The Mayor of London now rides a bicycle to work.
Leadership by example!!!

How come our 'leaders' in government earn so much and still spend so much furnishing the same houses and offices they furnished with our money last year?

Do you furnish your office every year? Why should the President, Governor or Senate President?

Wasteful leadership cannot make prudent investments!!!!! Q.E.D

The change we need is not just policy. Its in the quality of mind and persons at policy making positions.

That said, how will we effectively deliver sustainable desired-change? ,

Well said o.
We have suffered at the hands of leadership in Nigeria. The trauma is never-ending.

The One:

Correct.
Anyone who supported the toll gate is nuts.
Government is robbing the people on all fronts in Nigeria. In fact, it is becoming impractical for Nigerians to invest in Nigeria. Too many avenues of cheating, perpetuated by government.

My eyes are filled with tears as I see my beloved country turn into an unbearable state for his people, I see the situation getting worst and if we don't help ourselves today no one will help us out.

I have happen to live in most of those countries and there isn't comparabilities to any, while we fight today let us also fight for the future of our children, for better governance, health, power, food, education etc while we stay put until there is a great change and Goodluck Jonathan should be held responsible for the deaths of all who have died and are still going to die.

Let them be brought to justice if there is any,

We call on the police to join in this struggles of all Nigerians and please give your support in all ways you can, to sustain this campaign of revolution.

Patriot or death,

Population is insignificant in this issue. Take for example USA (pop. 300million) consumes more fuel that China (pop. 1.9 Billion) and India (pop. 1 billion), its the size of the economy that matters.

U r totally on point.

I wonder how Africans can't see that this selfish need by IMF to save the failing economy in Europe, else why the rush to force all African countries to remove subsidy of PMS. I hope people remember not too long ago the tussle between AU and EU on agricultural subsidy, thank God say Obasanjo na stubborn man we for hear am.

Country                             Population            Per Capita Income
Venezuela                         26mln                      $12,700
Kuwait                               3mln                       $48,900
S.Arabia                             27mln                     $24,200
Iran                                    76mln                     $10,600
Qatar                                 1.7mln                    $179,000
UAE                                    8mln                       $49,600
Algeria                                37mln                     $7,300
Libya                                   6.4mln                    $14,000
Iraq                                    32mln                      $3,800
Nigeria                               162mln                     $2500

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2004rank.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population

I am sure we can all see the correlation between high population and low per capita, with the exception of Saudi because Saudi produces about 9mln barrels of oil. If these countries can "afford" subsidy, can Nigeria?? You will probably also find that Nigeria is lower than all these countries on the corruption rating, meaning that with our small money, we are likely to be stealing more!! For eg If corruption in Libya costs $1000 per capita, they are left with $13,000! If corruption per capita in Nigeria is $1200, we are left with $1,300!! And that is not necessarilily only govt corruption, but also private sector and individual corruption as well.

Also consider that with less corruption over the years, these countries have better infrastructure and are therefore better posed to grow their per capita income. We on the other hand have to find the money from somewhere (from our paltry $2,500) to get out infrastructure to the same level as these guys (not that they will sit still and wait for us) and we still expect to spend so much on subsidy??

It is not our fault yes! Our leader of the past have thrown us into a deep hole and unfortunately to come out of it, we all have to struggle to climb out. It's not Jonathans fault that corruption and incompetence over the last 30-40years have landed us where we are, but the man has to start from today to try and get us out!!

@Poster
Your report is bias and misleading.

The populations of Libya, Kuwait, Qatar and UAE put together
is not upto the population of Lagos alone.

Below is the population of those countries:

Qatar         (1.5m)

Kuwait       (2.5m)

Libya         (6m)

U.A.E         (8m)

Venezuela  (26m)

S/Arabia     (27m)

Iraq           (32m)

Algeria       (37m)

Nigeria      ( 168m )

Besides, all these countries except Algeria produce more oil than Nigeria.
