well, if you are double sure you want to be a medical doctor, be ready to  score @ least 280 in ume because spaces are now limited, unlike in the past when there'll be merit admission, supplementary addmission and so on, there is little chance for that nowadays.
and are you sure you are not choosing medicine just for the sake of it being a childhood dream? make sure you do your groundwork to know what it really means to be a doctor, so you wont end up like most of my classmates who [although they are now doctors] are not willing to practice medicine.
i wish you all the best in your quest.

@poster,
Go to the only Nigerian medical college that has been able to successfully carryout a kidney transplant among other groundbreaking achievements. That is Obafemi Awolowo University Medical College (OAUTH). They recently assisted University of Maiduguri T.H., to do her first transplanting.

However,ur claim about OAU being tribalistic is unfounded and even ridiculos. I am a student there and i can tell u that u do not get what u do not deserve, regardless of ur extraction. Most of there heads in the college and hospital are even Igbos. Enough said!
Re: Top Ten Colleges Of Medicine In Nigeria by favouredjb(f): 1:12pm On Jan 15, 2012
What do u mean by OAU bin tribalistic?smh!anyway try olabisi onabanjo,u guys won't blv how good der medicine is,also UI and Unilag, all the best
Re: Top Ten Colleges Of Medicine In Nigeria by lagtim(m): 1:22pm On Jan 15, 2012
people just say things from afar without knowing what exactly is on ground. OAU tribalistic? that would be the joke of the year. the only problem you have is passing your UME, once you qualify by passing UME an th post-UME, you'll be admitted. that one is for sure.

@vic igbinedion does not have medicine for now cos it was recently disacredited, i won't advise u to put aau cos its seems dier license has also be withdrawn and moreover, the competition is going to be high, y not consider the schools listed above or check your brochure, abuad is also a good private school to study though its costly.
Re: Top Ten Colleges Of Medicine In Nigeria by Jarus(m): 1:34pm On Jan 15, 2012
Vic,
Can you show mme your proof that OAU is tribalistic, because the OAU I finished from is the most merit-driven institution I know?
Re: Top Ten Colleges Of Medicine In Nigeria by OHAJURU1: 1:38pm On Jan 15, 2012
tongue  i now realize that ppl just say way they are not sure of. i think Abia state uni is among the best
Re: Top Ten Colleges Of Medicine In Nigeria by sheyguy: 1:53pm On Jan 15, 2012
Recently britain discredited medical students from 9 public schools in Nigeria for failing standard, it was on NL, U can google it up.
Don't listen to those discreting private schools.
I think UNN,UNIBEN, and Ekpoma was among them.
Re: Top Ten Colleges Of Medicine In Nigeria by donigspain(m): 1:57pm On Jan 15, 2012
Am surprized that no one has suggested ESUT, Nawao, we boast of the best medical students in the country with our students having over 13-15 years of learning/working/practising experience. Surprised? Don't be, that simply because we don't graduate medical students but we do take in! Visit our school and u are sure to find a granny medical 'student' parading with piles of medical texts and 'it was white' medical/laboratory coat, Enough joke. @OP, I will suggest UNN (if u have got the brains) or ABU,Zaria (if u have got the liver).

Benbella College of natural medicine and herbal science, University of Aba, Ngwa road.

You will never regret it!!!  grin grin

@poster I can't speak of others but UNIZIK med school is good.
1. Its the only school which never goes on strike (including the current strike).
2. They have a steady and fast academic calendar. Infact from my interaction with med students around the country, I can say its the fastest. Also I can confidently tell you the almost exact time for all the MBs which never change.
3. In academics its not lacking
4. Admission is by merit. And if you are Yoruba you have a better chance cos its a federal uni and very dey western folks school in the south.

NB: It doesn't really matter where u get your MBBS certificate from. Once its a federal university its ok for me. You will soon discover that most of what u know as a Doctor is what you read on your own and not necessarily what you were taught. The lecturers are just there to guide you.

Ok will withdraw 'only' and replace it with 'among the few'. But then the calendar of UI is slower. A class mate of mine in sec school who got admission together with me is about 6 months slower and will be approx. 1year on graduation

But like I said most of what I know about other schools is by interaction with other med students and not a 1st hand experience

I may not really say that OAU is tribalist,bt watch it,they give priority to catchment leaving very few space for merit. So,if u are not from the catchment area,ur admission chance becomes extremely slim xpecially for a highly competitive course like medicine! @Op,I will advice u to enquire more about UNIBEN being ur catchment, they may likely admit this year.
Re: Top Ten Colleges Of Medicine In Nigeria by SuyaEater(m): 3:32pm On Jan 15, 2012
how long is medicine school in nigeria?
Re: Top Ten Colleges Of Medicine In Nigeria by godstino(m): 3:38pm On Jan 15, 2012
@op this is my final advice,.DON'T choose aau or uniben or igbinedion for mbbs cos you would end up wasting this year at home, there are good schools like ui,unilorin, oau and others, DONT also choose to.uniport except for other courses, cos these schools have been black listed by the nuc, shalom!!!

Your friend probably had an "accident" along the way. Unibadan has one of the fastest medical school calendars in the country, I am a witness to that.

Unilorin does not go on strikes but after the first MB they spend months at home before going to clinical school

So i heard @ the bolded. . . .would tell you not to put your hope there. . .besides, all those people saying my school is fast should know it's not about how fast you are but how well you finish. . .

See what the management of uniben has done to that great school.
Look at what the greed of some few people is doing to one of the best college of medicine in west africa, breaking the heart of thousands of aspiring medical students in Nigeria and abroad.
I just hope and pray something is done quickly.
It is too embarrasing!
are you a student there?. . . .lol @ being too embarrasing. . .i always have respect for most of the medical students. . .very true at the bolded. . .just wonder when they'll look into it cos i know then, igbinedion students and some other schools do come there to receive lectures. . . . .

Any medical school that has full accreditation is good ,dont insist on schools with keen competition afterall when u graduate as a medical doctor, it will not matter which school u graduate from but how good u are in ur choosing field.

I completely agree, UNIZIK never goes on strike!

IMSU's medicine is also very high standard but that school and strike, i never see!

OtunbaGm:

After UI, then UNILORIN(cos they don't strike) and to validate my point. This two schs top d chart in d recent rankings of d first 100 universities in Africa

Could we please have a link to these rankings? -Thanks!

What I know about other med skools Is by interaction with students there and I believe there a a lot of good skools out there, but of OAU I can tell u this much, you just gotta merit it and u'd have it! Forget that catchment stuff jor, just try, work hard and make the cut off for UME and post UME. Buh be prepared to do a lotta reading grin and believe me the college is a good one good luck.

i would have adviced my sch LASUCOM  cuz admission is relatively transparent in LASU but cosidering the insane increase in fees recently,i would advice u go to ilorin cuz they dont strike but to enter ilorin no easy ooo winkjavascript:void(0);
Re: Top Ten Colleges Of Medicine In Nigeria by Seanpeters: 5:08pm On Jan 15, 2012
@feraz,the comment from solomon111 and the complement you gave it did not portray the present situation at UNIBEN!They lost accreditation due to a particular class that was overpopulated.Meanwhile the accreditation has since being restored after meeting MDCN conditions.

I don't agree with you. They both matter (speed & quality).
Ok lets say you spend 9years in skul, them 3 years for house job and youth service (cos of the likely delays). That is 12yrs alone. Then you now have to think about specialization which in Nigeria is far tougher and may be longer than med skul. That brings you to about 18-20 years studying. Man that is worrisome
For me anyting above 7yrs for med school (without resit) leads to diminishing returns. You can ask students in schools which give 6 months break after each exam

LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL (LASUTH) IS WITH THE MODERN TECHNOLOGY A TEACHING HOSPITAL CAN PROVIDE, BUT TRIBALISM  AND COMPETITION WILL DISCOURAGE JAMBITES FROM GOING THERE,

He didn't have any delay. Although I agree that uni ilorin do not go on strike. I think their academic year is usually longer than normal and also their breaks may be long. All these contribute to the delay
