Will You Buy A Toy Gun For Your Child? by Ndipe(m): 1:59am On Jan 14, 2012
The sight of a toy gun in Church given as a present to a member of my congregation created a stir that it wasnt an appropriate gift. As a kid, I loved playing police and thief thought my mom objected once when I requested for this gift from a relative. As a grown-up, I can now understand her misgivings about toy guns, but apparently, there are some parents who would not bat an eyelash if their son or daughter were given one.

What are you thoughts about it?

This argument has lots of twists and can take on a whole lot of dimensions. . .
Does it make any sense banning toy guns for our sons but having a real gun and perharps with our sons knowledge?
Do our sons play gun battle games, watch lots of action movies?
Is there any statistics to prove that a % of armed thieves, assasins had toy guns as toddlers?

As a mother of boys,I was of the opinion that Toy guns were Not acceptable but guess what?my husband made me understand that it does not stop there.Just like the girls need sex talk, the boys need to be told the pros and cons of having, touching or facing a gun. They need to be told ! And once they are of age, they'd be going hunting with hunting rifles with their dad.

So OP,back to ur question,Toy guns as a gift is NOT accepted in my house.

No , I wouldn't buy any kid a toy gun. guns are meant to kill/injure, i wouldn't buy him a toy electric chair either. it doesn't mean I pretend guns don't exist.

No but my kids also have no interest in toy guns.
Re: Will You Buy A Toy Gun For Your Child? by Nobody: 9:43pm On Jan 30, 2012
I've never understood the attraction to guns, real or replica. Some replicas are convincing enough to be used in burglaries. I was never brought up with toy guns, and my children will be brought up the same way. Guns have no place in our home.

There are more appropriate (and educative) toys available. This is my take on toy guns, other parents may see things differently.

I grew up having several toy guns and see how I turned out?? grin

My toy gun actually went of during the sermon back when I was young and I hated myself for the way I was looked at by the entire congregation. My dad did not beat me . .he just laughed at me angry

Guess what, I knew not to EVER take a toy gun to church again.

I bought my son a PS3 game with a wireless gun and we play with it together . . my wife frowned at the idea at the time but she enjoys the game with us now.

I understand the society we live in . . but why act as if things do not exist when they are all around us?

My son watches tv . . he sees toy guns, catapults, rocks all over the place . .maybe his classmates even bring one to school on show n tell day.

I have gotten him to the point where he knows what real guns can do. . . he KNOWS.

His mom used to frown at anyone who said 'shut up' around him and I would let her know it's ok for him to hear it, as long as he knows the different btw right and wrong.

Now, if you say 'shut up' and he hears you, he will quickly let you know it's a wrong thing to say. Imagine if he was shielded from it all his life and finally heard it in his teenage years . .what would his curiousity do?

Let your kids know the existence of some things, as long as you as there to guide them between right and wrong.

I believe that is part of growing up.

I now know some of the downsides of my parents being over-protective of us. . .we did not 'grow up' on time. But I understand they were just being parents.

i don't think i would give my sons any other toy apart from toy guns.

it was the only gift i would take from anyone while growing up.
i had all sorts of guns, the space guns, pistols, mac-10s, mac-11s, tech-9s, etc.
that was the only toy that made sense to me. . . . .i still miss my childhood when it comes to christmas presents.
adulthood sucks!

If you were running a day care, i'll be the first to register my child.
Nice one.

Nope . . There are so many other kinda toys that the kids will throw out the gun for . . . Like get a kid an epad tablet and they will be dancing and be so busy while they learning . . . . . tongue

Yes and yes again!

Children see knives everyday. You think they dont know it can kill? You guys really think children are daft? Please dont turn ur male children into a jelly. Wives are very guity of this. Overprotecting their children meanwhile they enjoyed free lives. I love guns so much as a kid even now! yet i cannot bear to see blood or anyone hurt!

Of all the toys in the whole world, it is a toy gun I see fit for my son? Hell nah! He can play with anything else but replicas of dangerous weapons.
Re: Will You Buy A Toy Gun For Your Child? by Nobody: 6:52pm On Jan 31, 2012
i see absolutely NOTHING wrong with it. . . . . .  especially when the video games they play is filled with killing etc.

children can make the distinction between A GAME and REALITY (unless they are VERY dumb)
here is a clue: check any video game console, and you will see that the most popular games for kids are either about sport/driving or killing of some sort(doesnt have to be with a gun)!

one of the top seller today is the CALL OF DUTY saga, and its a killing fest, lol!

whats next? dont buy your kid a superman/spiderman suit because he may jump out the window in the future, thinking he can fly?
Re: Will You Buy A Toy Gun For Your Child? by Fhemmmy: 8:14pm On Jan 31, 2012
^^^ Getting them those games are choices that we made . . . .
Re: Will You Buy A Toy Gun For Your Child? by Nobody: 9:40pm On Jan 31, 2012
^^take SUPER MARIO game, for example, you would say it is a safe game, right?? what about the fact that the characters have to jump on top of others to "kill"/crush them, is that any better? wouldnt you think that this is just as dangerous as gunning them down?

the whole issue lays down with parents having their kid understand that this is just a game/toy, and that nothing should be copied in real life.
Re: Will You Buy A Toy Gun For Your Child? by freecocoa(f): 9:45pm On Jan 31, 2012
My brother had toy guns while we were growing up,funny enough most of them were bought by my mum,he is her only son and she did well to teach him and we the girls right from wrong,my brother and his friends were the ones I practically played with while growing up,the games we mostly played involved toy guns ofcourse and so far we(my bro & I) aren't armed robbers or criminals,he's even the most well behaved amongst us.

Like someone said, smart kids know what a real gun can do and also know that a toy gun isn't real, now if one is scared of it having a negative influence on them, how about knives that are kept in the house,do you think they don't know that can be used to inflict injuries too?what of objects like nail, dagger, axe etc, they see all these on tv or even hear it from somewhere.

All a good parent need do is,teach your child(ren) the right things, don't let them learn basic things from elsewhere, let them learn and hear from you.

I have a 3 years old cousin and another cousin who is 23, one day the one of 23 was around and the little girl was reciting A is for apple and he told her A is for A$$ and not apple but she replied"its a lie, miss Anna(her teacher) said A is for apple and mummy said my teacher is right, uncle you don't know how to read it" he did that more than thrice but she kept saying the same thing and even reported him to her mum, what I'm saying is let your kids know what they ought to and if they are smart,it will stick with them.

There is no harm it. When I was a kid, all I ever wanted and had were toy guns so that I could play war games . It did not do any harm to my outlook. as an adult, I abhor violence though I still play with water guns with my kids.
parents should do their job ti mpress upon thier children what is right and what is wrong and the consequences of making wrong choices. It has nothing to do with what toys they played. Psychological traumas do more havoc in the mind of children than toys.

i cant remember all the Super Mario games, however, i know there are some that are better . . . .
Also, still better than a little kid playing with a toy gun and saying, dieeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Am not into toy guns cos it doesn't make sense to me especially around my son.

I went home to find out that my son has a toy gun, i frowned at my wife for accepting a toy gun for my son, she said he is just a kid, now the boi has graduated to making guns from anything, even a slice of bread angry

Re: Will You Buy A Toy Gun For Your Child? by ceejayluv(m): 3:22pm On Feb 08, 2012
Why not? I grew up playing wit various types of toy guns ranging from light pellet shooters to water jet pistols. Of course i would luv 2 play "war" games wit my wife and kids and also virual interactive shooting games. I wil state the dangers of real weapons 2 my kids clearly and be careful not to allow them access to a real gun (if i got 1). Boys wil be boys.
Re: Will You Buy A Toy Gun For Your Child? by DisGuy: 3:29pm On Feb 08, 2012

how many of your friends who had toy guns as kids own a real gun today?
you people can be so obtuse sometimes. . . .

because you had toy cars made you a mechanic or because you played with balloons made you a condom lover?
cheiiii - your reasoning is crass.

@ kokoye

U too get sense.

Nigerians attach sentiments to everything. Guns dont kill people, people kill people. A toy gun is not going to kill anyone

Re: Will You Buy A Toy Gun For Your Child? by KayDee4: 3:55pm On Feb 08, 2012
Why not? I wouldn't deny my son the experience of tons of fun i had with guns. I had a lot of toy guns as a kid, played "police and thief" a lot and pretended to shoot people while they pretended to die too, but in real life I've never shot anyone with a real gun.

Its your responsibility to teach your kids the difference between play, gaming and real life.

Only a naturally psycho kid will want take his 'virtual reality' gaming escapades into real life.
