I still don't get why anyone who does not have shady motives would go study in a war zone. There are daily bombings and drive-by shootings in Iraq. The country is still awash with suicide bombers and sectarian conflict. I find it difficult to beleive anybody went there just to study.

sir,there is nothing dangerous (not even nuclear weapon) can stop a devout Shia Muslim from visiting the tombs of the Imams (as),especially in Najaf and Karbala.if you read the history of these visits,the Shia have long being targets but they are not deterred.our soul and identity as Shia belong to those holy places.even aside,the Imams (as) buried in those places and associated with those places are highly regarded and loved and honored by all muslims,be shia or sunni.

also,the hawza in Najaf and Qom,they have being known as great centers of scholarship for centuries.this is not something new.those are the headquarters for shia islamic learning.so inspite of the risks people still go to those places to learn.in recent years,people might have avoided iraq and instead move to the holy cities of Qom or Mashad in Iran were there is security and safety.
