@ Ayoade, please how easy is it to stay back after masters in the UK? or how did you go about it in your own case? |
Re: Nigerian Students In The Uk How Do You Survive? by ayoadeade1: 7:45pm On Sep 30, 2012 |
MrNigeria.: Hi, It is difficult to stay back after your studies in this present time. The 2yr post study work visa is cancelled now so the only option is to get a job ( within the extra 4months usually on student visas ) with a company that is willing to sponsor you and then you can switch to tier2 work visa. A few int'l students still manage to land decent jobs and get sponsored but it is very difficult and depend on so many factors such as the uni you attend, your dicipline, your results, yourself, luck etc. In my own case, I did a B.sc not M.sc (Had HND in Nigeria so joined the B.sc program halfway) at an average university but one of the only two universities in the UK offering my course at bachelors level, so we have companies coming to recruit year in year out. I also made a good result and was lucky as well. I got my current job through my university but also got offers from outside. Any other info, Please post. Cheers 1 Like |

Donxavier: They do it because of the high unemployment rate at home, the comforts that are built into daily life in the UK, and to enjoy the perceived success others believe they have achieved. 3 Likes |

ayoade.ade:How about if one take option two? Option one; tier 2 Option two; highly skilled? |

Re: Nigerian Students In The Uk How Do You Survive? by Nobody: 1:21pm On Oct 21, 2012 |
Donxavier:In UK, we have two major type of working visa. Namely; work permit and highly skilled. Work permit is when you get a job and the establishment is willing to sponsor you why highly skilled is when you apply as highly skilled after graduaton? The disadvantages of highly skilled is that you will maintain some amount of money in your bank account for some time or so. That is what i meant.. |

What sort of student spends £100 on food a week?? Thats insane. Lets be objective here a student works the 20 hours a week as the border agency stipulates will probably earn about that a week. So tell me is the student going to spend all that on food alone? What about rent?? The only thing that even brings my cost of living minus rent and housng associated costs close to that a month is because I smoke and cigarrettes are insanely expensive in the this country!! And may I add that I have a good job as an IT consultant and earn £2500 a month after Tax. |

peteafrik88: @Skywalker; Pls I need advice on how to survive in the town. How to secure inexpensive and nice accomodation, part time jobs, etc? Thanx Portsmouth is cool. its getting expensive though due it being like a tourist attraction and close to the sea but not as expensive as London. Surviving in Portsmouth is easy. There are part time jobs. Most popular part time job that are available are Care work and support worker. House rent are fairly okay as you can get one between thee range of £200 - £350 per month (1 room in a house) in the Fratton area. Food is available and fairly cheap and enough African stores in Portsmouth. Naijas plenty around also. The town is cool as its not rowdy. 1 Like 1 Share |

@Skywalker; Thank you so much for the info, I remain grateful. I am good with a handiwork, which is barbing and hoping to secure a part time job around that. Hiw possible and rewarding is that? Hope it will not be against the visa laws, as adviced by a poster in a previous post? |

Hiw possible and rewarding is that? Hope it will not be against the visa laws, as adviced by a poster in a previous post? I think it is against the rules establishing a business while you are in school.Remember if you are on a student visa, you are going to be restricted with the amount of hours you work. Its risky but you can do your barbing in your house but strictly for your guys and people who wont snitch you out. That's still a risk which if you are caught, you know what happens next |

@Skywalker; Thanx all thesame. For the barbing, I intend to work for people not start my own business there, it will be my part time job. I will also try to work in between the restricted hours according to the visa rules. I prefer a more flexible part time work, than other regular jobs. |

I will also try to work in between the restricted hours according to the visa rules. Not sure if there are jobs for barbers. They are quite a few around but not sure if they are actually looking for someone as most of the barbers are actually the owners. I cant say as they might be looking for someone part time also. You can try when you come around. Most of them are around the Fratton area which where most Naijas are. |
