Let’s start with the question “What is a Project?”  A Project is actually a temporary venture to produce a unique product, service or result. The fact that it is temporary connotes the fact that it has definite start and finish date. Examples of a project include the construction of a building and the creation of a new business.

So what is Project Management?

It involves the use of certain tools, knowledge and techniques to achieve the results of a project. One of such tools is what we call a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). The WBS is a hierarchical breakdown of the work to be done in executing a project. The WBS  of developing a new business would include: gathering requirements of the business (what is it supposed to produce?) and writing a business plan (indicating how to effectively and efficiently spend available resources, segmenting the plan into phases with focus on the growth of the business over time, projection of expected Return On Investment etc).
