Re: Seamen: Ratings, Officers, Engineers, Captains: Please Share Your Experience by Konjour(m): 1:41pm On Mar 12, 2012
The STCW 95 certificates are vital, but to make headway smoothly,it'd be best if you acquire a HND/Bsc in Nautical Science,or Marine engineering.etc. With your current papers you'd only fit in as an inexperienced rating on most ships(which is quite rare considering the fact that most shippers recruit highly experienced ratings to make up for their lack of "paper" qualifications) thus if you can afford it,it'd be best to further your maritime studies first. The RMU and Egypt's Maritime tech academy are still some of the most reputable in the African region BTW. Good luck. 'hoy!

You have to search for vessel owner companies or commercial owner companies and submit your CVs with them, i can assist you with the list as regards ship owners in Nigeria but right now, i don't have access to the list as i am onboard a vessel now @pwa as agent. Try and look for panafric limited at 34 creek road or Union Maritime in apapa and submit your CV with them, the operate as vessel owners. I hope this helps 4 now

It's advisable to get standard certification but it's not always about certificates when it comes to maritime work, it's all about experience. Let the poster get a job if possible before considering going of other certificates. Even if he possesses all the maritime certifications in the world without adequate work experience, he's nobody.

There are requirements that IMO expect all seamen to have which you have successfully acquire some. You also didnt say what you are going for: weather deck or engine. There is what is called 'certificate of competency COC' for every positions on board ships. You need nimasa medical certificate, e-passport etc. What i would advice is you should look for a seaman that would guide you like a mentor, that way you stay up to date with info. Wish you best of luck!

I dont want to debunk the claims of some of the fellow posters on this thread so as not to derail the purpose of the thread in the first place. @Poster,I was advising you about trying to acquire a couple more certificates before venturing to sea to enable you join a ship as a cadet and not as a rating, but if as you quipped before, you'd like to join as a rating,no problem, its your choice. However,if you can afford it,you'd find my advise useful in the long term. Cheers.

iKoksi:

Good one vokious!
CoC is only required if you want to work as an officer (Deck or engine).
but for both crew and officers, Mandatory courses, medical fitness certificate, Int Passport, yellow fever, Discharge book are all required

Like someone mentioned earlier, HND/BSc is not necessary a requirement to work at sea. Work at sea is all about experience

ENTRY LEVELS (without previous sea experience)

Crew:
For Deck Crew: JOS - (Junior Ordinary Seaman)
For Engineering Crew: an Oiler or Trainee Machinist (with previous experience on any mechanical engineering, working with lathe machines, welding, fabrication...etc)
For Galley (cooking) Department: Messman or trainee cook (with previous cooking/chef experience)

Officers:
For Deck Officers (CoC required): OOW (Junio Officer of the watch)
For Engineering officers (CoC Required): EOOW (junior Engineer Officer of the Watch)
There's also a position for electricians... but for this (mostly on international going vessels), most companies with require min OND/HND in electrical/electronics engineers. Entry Level is trainee electrician.

All your choice. I'm experienced seafarer, u can ask questions if u want.
God Bless.
Thank God we have an experienced seaman here which could of help to d poster. From your comment, i get you engage in foreign trade. However, these days, most companies dont want to employ inexperience seaman and when they do, is usually their relatives which is becoming a problem for the industry. Some of these vessels owners dont care about their employee so long the ship is on steady contract. Some vessels crew dont even have the required qualifications to be onboard because of connections. Basically, i am referring to the near coastal vessels. @poster, you need more than mandatory to start a career in the maritime industry. Best of luck!

Hi Friends,
I hold a Highger National Diploma and a National Diploma both in Electrical Engineering from the Kwara state Polytechnic in Nigeria. Finished NYSC 2011.
I hold these CERTIFICATE courses from MARITIME ACADEMY, Oron in Nigeria:
1.Elementary First Aid certificate 2. Personal safety and Social Responsiblities certificate 3.Personal Survival Techniques certificate and 4. Fire prevention and Fire Fighting certificate
I possess a Seamans Record book and Certificate of Discharge.
I attended a Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental Competence Development course (QHSE)Level 3of 3 and also Graduate Certificate in Management from the Nigerian Institute of Management.
Its been so difficult seeking employment for like 3 years now, i have done all manner of jobs to just survive.
So i think the best is for me to upgrade my skill abroad but the tuition fees and other financial per-requisites are scary.
I am 25 years of age and would like to study Marine engineering or Nautical sciences.
I am just so confused. I need professional suggestions.
Thank you.

Deck
Re: Seamen: Ratings, Officers, Engineers, Captains: Please Share Your Experience by iKoksi(m): 9:56am On Feb 20, 2013
achu442: Deck
okay!
most courses you'v listed are for specific kind of ships so if i know d type of ship you'll be working on, might be of help, nowadays companies are obliged to train their staff so u might be 'helping' your company by paying for most of these courses on your own, e.g International Safety Management:

Helicopter Landing Officer - Specific for ships like PSV
Quater Master - kinder military, not 'very' necessary for merchant ships,
Efficient Deck Hand, - only for Deck, not required if you have STCW Deck OOW
Marine Engr Assistant - only for engineers, not required if you have STCW Engineering OOW
Tanker Familiarisation - Tankers only (Oil, Chemical or Gas)
International Safety Management - for all ship types (you'll need this, tho for most companies you can do this on their own account, like Computer Based)
Rigging and Slinging(Banksman) - Part of your Deck OOW
Aviation Radio Telephone Training - Very specific/rare

I'm so glad i found this thread. I'll be starting the mandatory stcw course on Monday then go on to do the oil and tanker familiarisation course. I've a couple of questions.
1. How easy is it to get a job.
2. What else do I need to work on a petrol/chemical tanker apart from the discharge book, health certificate, and yellow fever vaccine.
3. What is the salary structure like for ratings?
4. Are there recruitment agencies that deals specifically with seafarers?
5. Lastly do you have any information about studying nautical science at Gdynia Maritime Academy in Poland?
Thanks in anticipation of your replies.

Guys i presume others might benefit if we do an open discussion rather than private mails.
Please share your concerns/experience here, we'll try to sort out as much.
Seafaring in Nigeria is just picking up speed, if 'by luck' PIB & Cabotage law are fully enforced then we'll be looking at the bright side.
Then also we need to pray for NIMASA to wake up to their responsibilities.
