I got a deal to buy an almost brand new Mitsubishi Galant 2000 ES model with full options at a car dealer last week. Before I paid, my Fiancee told her mechanic what I wanted to buy and he really discouraged her. for that reason, we have not paid for the car. I think its a good deal but I dont want to act contrary to my fiancee's wishes. what do you think?

There is no almost brand new 8 yrs old car

Galant is a very reliable car based on my experiece. Check on mileage and timing belt(change every 60,000miles,) and condition of transmission fluid.Your street side mechanic has no idea what is in the engine bay so its technically to advanced(if he can't fix it no business)

For the 6 yrs I used a '95 Galant, it started up every single day till I sold it last year at 179000 miles original engine and transmission. The new owner still drives it.

How a car was used in the first 60,000 miles really affects its quality @ 100k+ mile. Many of the Camry that came back after 3 years lease were found to still have factory oil filters(i.e lessee did not change engine oil for 3 years) . If you end up buying one of those Camry @ 105k miles you will experience leaky seals/rings, and engine failure from gunk build up. One experience with a car of questionable maintenance record will not convince that Mitsubishi is bad.My brother drives a Montero 5sp 2.4l I4 and all he has done is water pump/timing belt @90k miles now has 165k n it still running 700 mile trips.

I really don't see nothing really bad with the complaints but the airbag not deploying.Paint goes with using wrong soaps no wax happens to all cars.Brakes fix if its bad.Engine fire, check your thermostats! Rearbrake won't be bad if people don't drive with the hand brake on.

If I have to make a choice I'll still pick the Galant for myself.

First I won't pay more than $17k for a Galant cos they are cheap.

If there is any warranty issue I'm very sure it will be fixed by Mitsubishi.

Wash your car without waxing with a laundry detergent for 3 month (scrub well) it will take off everything.

There is always an assembly worker under some influence(divorce,drugs, child support), so its not a bad product.

If transmission has been serviced its less likely to slip/die. If it kaput within warranty it will be replaced there is extended warranty available to users of new cars.

Economically car will not be a write off they should have tried crashing at 60mph then complain airbag didn't go off.

If you put an auto in D2, or leave your handbrake on then get to highway speed for 20min, its enough to do damage to any trans/brake we've all done it it depends on driver to sense something wrong stop and check it.
You always smell smoke before you see it. Imagine when you drive and only stop after seeing fire how careful a driver could such a person be?

You won't use dish soap on your car, but most of the complaint sonds like those that will come from a fat lazy person living government subsidized in mobile home communities; the kind of person that will used a laundrt detergent.

I won't be affirmative if I am not sure of what I know about. I use to own a Diamante and it was a car that had its own personality, was problematic and totally unreliable. It was also very expensive to maintain. When I was done with it, I had paid a little over the price I bought the car. I got rid of it at no cost.
