What's there to feel?
Re: White/latino/asian Wearing Native by iyawo1005(f): 9:09pm On Oct 30, 2007
I have heard that some people think it is disrespectful or that it is making a joke of the culture.
Re: White/latino/asian Wearing Native by SwtNsoFLyy(f): 12:06am On Oct 31, 2007

you wouldnt believe just how MUCH respect that some white folks have for the African culture and history, I saw a topic when many Niralanders were amazed and proud of a white lady singing a Nigerian song awhile back, why would Africans be upset at a white person showing appreciation for African dress attire? PPL look at me and think im Latina, or sometimes White, and even asked if I was Asian,, but im African American, so where would the disrepsect be when I marry my African husband whenever I dress in African attire?

not knowing my background, and based solely on 'seeing me' in the attire, would i be viewed as disrespecting African culture? I would hope such is not true.

love & light,

Iyawo1005, !!!
it looks like you have a problem or that you are bored and have nothing to do
how come that you have this type of ideas
if i like (and actually i do like) to wear Boubou and other traditianl wear from nigeria, Burkina, Niger and Ghana,
i believe that this cloths have theire own purpose especially with the weather here in the W african countries
i would feel very very proud to see a African wearing my traditinal cloths ,

let me ask you this: what will feel a asian when he sees Nigerian driving Toyota, and listening to the music on the latest Sony or Kenwood Stereo and of course making all the phone calls on Sony-ericson or samsung ,

he Bro, wake up, it's 2008 already, the world is a village and the cities houses, cool
Re: White/latino/asian Wearing Native by Gmoney5(m): 3:41pm On Oct 31, 2007
It is actually very much contrary to being disrespectful.

It is much appreciated!

Sorry, I didnt mean to offend anyone. I am just going to a wedding with my boyfriend and I want to wear a native but I was not sure if others would be upset with me wearing it but thank you for shedding light on the topic.

me personally i don't mind people of over race or culture wearing african clothes but i don't like the fact that they think every african garment is a kente clothe or a dashiki. i also heard that black americans don't like seeing non-africans wearing african clothing.

white women at my church wear Nigerian natives all d time. I just smile 'cause they look funny in them. The whole outfit don't usually match. Some of 'em wear a native shirt with a casual skirt or pants. That is such a fashion error. My sister and i just laugh when we see them, it's funny.

I have not met a Nigerian who doesn't where European clothing. If you wear their clothing, why can't they wear yours?
Re: White/latino/asian Wearing Native by fofura(f): 6:54am On Jan 04, 2008
The reason she asks is becasue there is so much "political correctness" and racial discord in the united states of america. Everyone is whining and complaining about something or other or pointing fingers or worried to step on someone toes because they use the "wrong" word, wrong clothes, wrong music, wrong car, wrong education, wrong slang, or even if they straighten the hair and color ( oooh who she think she is? ) or because she is cornrowing the straight blonde hair ( ooooh who she think she is? ) Trust me, kiss your blessed Nigerian soil that you do not live in the united states of america. EVERYONE IS AMERICAN in this country regardless of skin color, and they have the mind that goes along with it. You cannot escape culture, regardless of your skin color, slowly it will shape your mind and actions, so her reason to ask that question is quite valid. Try wearing traditional dress, wrapper set, boubou etc., and being white or perceived as white, whatever that is , and you will get your ass kicked or a lot of teeth sucking and nasty comments coming your way. Nice country.

Suits are worn in all countries most american/white people do not wear native usually unless they are friends or dating someone in a culture where there is native clothing.

Alaafia Iyawo 1005. I think you should wear exactly what you feel good in and if it is traditional clothes all the more power to you as woman. After all, it is style too, and I have never known a woman who does not appreciate a nice hand of cloth, a fabulous embroidery or lace set, no matter where they come from. I have yards and yards of fabric I am taking back to nigeria just to get sewn up in the latest. Just accent your womanly assets and hold your head high. Forget what anyone might think. And if your man likes you in those clothes, all the better.

@OYIBO4U
I am not bored I had a question and asked it thats all but thanks for your concern and as for the Toyota reference, this model is marketed all over the world as for native it is usually worn by people within the culture.

@everyone

Thanks for your insight. I had received mixed comments on the subject and just wanted to hear others opinions.

Re: White/latino/asian Wearing Native by iyawo1005(f): 7:40pm On Jan 14, 2008
I do not believe white people started wearing jeans first so that does not apply.
Re: White/latino/asian Wearing Native by Jafarre(m): 11:38pm On Jan 14, 2008
lol that was a silly response@toyotas like japanese invented automobiles. but i think it looks kind of silly, like when they dress like akata or ghetto mexican, but it isn't a bad thing or insult.

A fellow AA such as myself would instantly be able to tell that you're black. I question why people have assumed you were hispanic when you're look is very common among AA, you'd fit right in with the females in my family, and a person would have to be blind as a bat to mistake you for a white woman.
