OP
Your posts says luxury bus owners want to end night travel yet the title says it's the FRSC. Why would you put up a misleading title, is it to draw attention to this thread? Lame.

Why not ban travelling all together. Our backwardness is really frightnening.

@OP,
Your headline is quite misleading.
Senator Obende is NOT the FRSC

Lawmaker seeks end to night travel

The Nation | Wed-12-08-2011 | By Musa Odoshimokhe |
Mindful of the inherent dangers of travelling at night on the road, including armed robbery and accidents, Senator Domingo Obende has called on the Federal Government to ban it. He said it has become urgent that the government through the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) should prevail on night travellers to switch to daytime journeys until the situation on the roads improve.

Obende, who spoke with Newsextra in Lagos, said it is really sad that Nigerians are being killed in the most gruesome manner after they being dispossessed of their belongings by robbers. The Senator noted that it is too callous an act for robbers to ask their victims to lie down on the road after dispossessing them of their valuables only for an on-coming vehicle to run over them. He therefore urged the FRSC to impose stiff penalties on any transport firm that has the penchant of embarking on night journeys.

He said: “The FRSC should penalise offenders of night journey prohibition until we have very good roads with cameras and streetlight to protect our lives and property. “Security lapses have also contributed to lack of safety on our roads.”
“If government has the political will to address some of the basic needs of the people, especially security, lives will be saved.”
Continuing, he said: “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop. If the youth are encouraged to take to farming, they won’t think of taking to robbery because they will be gainfully employed.” He stressed that government should seriously look into the issue of security, and engage the Boko Haram sect in constructive dialogue in order to move the country forward. This, he said, will prevent the country from being listed as a terrorist nation.
“The world is watching how we are handling our security challenges.

Instead of banning Night time travel buses why not Fix the Roads and increase security with better equipment. Nigerian politicians always want to take the easy way out instead of doing their job. Whats so hard about doing the right thing?

This is not the first proposal of banning Night travel nor will it be the last.

Anytin dat doesn't go right, ban it;which kind of backward nation are we.Do we know d economic impact of night biz on overall economic growth.I have an alternate view about this& it is dat d more economic activity& mvt there is during night hours d less we may evn av armed robbery attacks.D right tin to do,whc d senator failed to,as usual, analyse& advocate,is for there to b a massive improvement in d road network& regular police patrols on d highways during night time;there doesn't need to b road blocks, but to ensure dat any police jurisdiction closest to d highways av daily night time patrols. But jst because some pple are inept& sometimes bereft of thinkin, dey advocate d short way out w/o realisin d overall damage to d nation& economy whose growth, nigeria more dan any other nation now needs;less d robbery dey seek to curtail wt dere halfbrained ideas will ironically get worse.

How can any sane person embark on night journey in Nigeria roads?Night journeys must be stopped.Well, kill yourself if you want by embarking on night journey. Why must one not travel during the day?
Re: Senator Obende Calls On FG To Ban Night Travelling by ektbear: 9:43am On Mar 26, 2012
Why not just let people do what they want?

Those who don't want to travel by night shouldn't.

And those who do should be able to.

Live and let live..

Is this nonsense what this senators paid millions do in Abuja?
Such a dumb suggestion.
Last year it was Ekeremadu [deputy Senate president] speaking about legitimizing prostitution.
Now this from another 'jobless' man been paid by the state.
Why not suggest men should be banned from their wives at night? shocked shocked shocked

I have always advocatd for night travels to be banned. It is practically a suicide mission. If anything happens on the road, you wont know where to run. People should stop travelling by night.

These people r unbelievable. trying to justify jumbo pay for no work by pushing for useless bills/laws. d guy just want his stats to count (doesn't want to b seen as "just riding d bus") it doesn't matter how sendless his bill is.

the only affordable way to move from Lagos to katsina involves night journey, except they will provide free or subsidized transit accommodation for me in Abj.
Re: Senator Obende Calls On FG To Ban Night Travelling by surmeister(m): 10:32am On Mar 26, 2012
I think its a welcome idea. The danger's of traveling at is too high. Until things to safe guard traveling at night r okay I think it should be stopped for nw. My own idea anyway n am entitled to it. NO.
Re: Senator Obende Calls On FG To Ban Night Travelling by ProfJYK(m): 10:35am On Mar 26, 2012
u want economic development with this kind of stone age thinking.

FIX SECURITY AND EVERYTHING ELSE WILL B ADDED
our factories run at minimal utilisation because they don't run night shift, when there is low demand for power.
Our roads r crowded and over used because everyone gets on them at d same time everyday(morning till night)
in general, productive manpower hours lost daily to traffic will increase production if channelled properly

Senator Obende, try again

These guys are not serious. They should fix the roads, infrastructure, eradicate poverty and more especially ensure the security of life and property in Nigeria than making all sorts of pronouncements.
Re: Senator Obende Calls On FG To Ban Night Travelling by Nobody: 10:56am On Mar 26, 2012
“The FRSC should penalise offenders of night journey prohibition until we have very good roads with cameras and streetlight to protect our lives and property. “Security lapses have also contributed to lack of safety on our roads.”

They are banning night travel to shield us from the dangers on the road. This is the same type of warped thinking that surrounded the issue of fuel subsidy removal in january. Their mindset is to attack symptoms or effects of a problem (even if it brings unnecessary pain to the masses) instead of going after the root cause and attempting to solve the problem.

Has this mumu lawmaker thought about the traffic congestion that will happen along some major regional routes if there are no night travels?
When was the last time he went to Abuja by road (if he has done it before in his life)?
How many days will it take people to travel from Lagos to maiduguri if you can only travel in daytime?
Have they made provisions for transit points where you can pass the night?
What happens if you are on the road by the cut off time for night travel? Are we supposed to park the luxurious bus/our car on the road and sleep till day break before continuing the journey?

plenty questions from my fish brain. I wonder what other questions the book people will raise concerning this idea.

Some Nigerians are indeed very ignorant, simply put. The senator and those suppoprting the motion to ban night travel, you all don't seem to realise that travelling from some end of the country to another cannot be achieved in 12 hrs.
Try Lagos to Maiduguri on a commercial bus and we should be ready for a 20hr ride. Now how do you achieve that without travelling in the night.

Re: Senator Obende Calls On FG To Ban Night Travelling by Rich4god(m): 11:25am On Mar 26, 2012
All those of you who are in support of what the senator proposed need to have their heads checked. I do travel at night but not that frequent... One thing you guys fail to undastand is that if they ban night travelling, then the average accident rate on our roads will be "EVERY FIVE MINUTES" and the death rate will be more devastating than what night travel brings. Do you guys know the number of trailers, luxurious buses and other vehicles that ply the road at night, and then think of the traffic effect when all these vehicles travel during the day. We should be clamouring for improved security and better road networks and not ban on any form of travel.

Talk of mis-placed priorities. The issue is not night but security.
(I believe one should be able to travel wheneven he/she pleases)
Fix the economy, get your acts right, ensure proper steps are taken to guard and protect citizens, man our borders (so there are no excuses that our neighbours are the evil ones), re-habilitate the police force, and do your job senator. embarassed
