Why Do People Change Their Names? by davades(m): 9:21pm On Mar 29, 2012
I've been thinking about this ƒσя a while, that's why I decided to ask fellow NLs weither I can get a soothing relief to this self asked question of mine. Why do people tend to change their name whenever they are outside or in school, there's this Ǧ☺☺ϑ friend of mine I met in school 7yrs ago,he's known as Niyi in sch meanwhile his name is Jelil(i) cheesy cheesy @home,although Niyi is his second name so I kept wondering why some people not proud of the name given to them @birth, that's why I'm a fan of Denrele Edun, his name funny burrrrr #muah# he's proud of it. Wht's ur view

I changed my name. its not legal yet but it will be. My family refuses to call me by it tho, but everyone else does because that's all they know me by. I changed my name, because I didn't feel like the name given to me at birth suited me anymore. It didn't describe who I was as a person. So i christened myself, and replaced my birth name, with a name of my choosing, which I feel more comfortable being called.

I was gonna open a similar thread. I don't know why Igbos Nigerians shy away from using their Igbo names. Most of them bear Igbo names at home and English names while in school. Some of them feel ashamed to tell people their native name.

I do not share the idea of changing the name. I do not understand why ashamed of something that really should be proud ....
But ultimately changed the name is not so bad ... basically comparing that with people changing sex ...
Is not it?

I support the idea that we should be proud of our native names,
but if the name means something that is not worthy, you can change it.
It is not by force to bear a particular name...i mean we should not be subjected to that
torture of answering names that are not worthy. kpakam!!! I rest my case.

I totally agree with you.
In the sad days of slavery, Africans were sent to America in the dark holds of slave ships. Those who died were thrown overboard, and the few survivors were forced to change their native names to Western names, taking of course the name of the new master.
I insist that slaves were forced to change its name.
I think something has changed since then. Truth?

Op, it's because people don't know that most people don't like them because of their name. They think the name changed would make them likeable. How wrong they are!
However, lots of people are wise now and they see beyond that your identity. For they know the name doesn't determine your physical appearance nor your mental state.

Ok, my baptismal name was Joseph and that was the name I was known with for the most part of my primary and secondary schools; well, things changed after I joined the movement for the actualization of the sovereign state of Biafra(MASSOB). Uwazuluike opened my eyes to the mockery the whites has made with through the introduction of christianity. He explained to us how the whites manipulated our forefathers in droping their native name for a meaningless white man name. I discovered that most western names we bear have no positive meaning or nobody knows the meaning! With this I made up my mind that I dont want anything to do with that name again. I decided and named myself after my grand father who has a vry powerful name.

This what i actually mean...'Gbemre' in the Urhobo language means 'useless'.
So, why should one continue to bear such name because he/she wants to be identified as an
Urhobo person or African.I'll rather bear a name such as 'White' or 'Brown' than
bear a name that means 'useless'
The most annoying part of it is that people still bear the name 'Gbemre' till date!

As long as they are not changing their names to Oyibo European names, then I'm ok with them changing their name.

its a very irritating trend and the funny thing is when they pronounce their so called oyibo name u go wan die of laugh, the pronounciation is bastardized...Biko i dont think a meaningless oyibo name can trump a traditional name anyday.
