Meat abstinence observed by the catholic denomination on good fridays;could anyone orient me on it's origin,symbolism,biblical view of it if any and it's significance?

Ex-catholic here. I always hated this catholic tradition. I hate fish and my mum used to cook fish on fridays during lent.

One more reason not to take religion seriously!

meat was expensive so church had people celebrate without meat so the poor are not jealous of the rich.

How can meat really be expensive only on good fridays? Logic mind,should i document this as your logical view on this thread or you were just joking?

Its just like making a sacrifice to God to abstain from something you enjoy doing <eating meat>. In summary, catholics are all expected to fast on good friday, but due to human weakness, some cant fast. So there4 catholics are encourage to stay away from meat and that doesn't stop others <who want to> from fasting. Note... Its a sacrifice that you make to God as an individual, its not imposed on some1 by the church.

I am amazed at the number of meat VS good friday threads up in here.

Catholics are not asking the whole world to abstain from meat. it like your pastor telling his congregation to fast

from xam to tpm on xyzday. Does it have to be spelt out in the bible what you should fast from?

9jaman007,you sounded rather aggressive in your post.I must point out to you i am not in anyway against this exercise and i can't remember in my post ever saying catholics are compelling the entire world to observe this exercise and am not aware if a thread similar to this exists somewhere.So this abstinence is actually meant to be a fast? Thanks for enligtening me.
