is there a separate section for people to ride bicycle?
Re: 2nd Niger Bridge - Onitsha...........video by jason123: 6:12pm On Apr 24, 2012
Da infamous, has the construction started? Do you have the master plan? From the video, I saw a railway line. Where does that lead to?

I'm tired of seeing plans. I want action. All they are doing is getting people's hopes up without much being done to satisfy that hope.

What states? Anambra alone? Where does it start and terminate? Eg does it start at Anambra and terminate at Delta (Asaba)? Is there a map to show the master plan? The train route?

Please don't take this the wrong way as there is no malice in my questions.

Secondly, why can't the SE states do it themselves because waiting for the FG is futile. What do you think?

I have this feeling that these politicians are using this bridge as a form of electoral candy! Is it until the Niger-bridge collapses and thousands of people die before they wake up to their responsibility Nigeria NEVER fails to disappoint!

This makes so much sense and it's sad to see several administrations promise this then fail to deliver.

Imagine a high speed rail link between Lagos and Enugu that'll also have stops in Benin, Asaba, Onitsha, etc.
Re: 2nd Niger Bridge - Onitsha...........video by bashr8: 6:52pm On Apr 24, 2012
rubbish , its time these dumb southeast governors build that bridge themselves, they are showing us video plan while states like rivers, akwaibom and even lagos are mounting up bridges here and there.

Indeed! The governors could even get an investor to build the bridge and erect tolls. They'd make their money back in no time. Anyone who doesn't want to pay the toll can use the old Niger Bridge.

I don't have a clue on that but i think it will serve from LAGOS,ASABA, ONITSHA,PH,ENUGU,IMO, abia,CALABAR,and some northern part......

A spot-on comment! You are fast becoming one of my favorite Nairalander!

About the high-speed rail way. It is the most obvious thing to do. Even the blind knows it.
I heard ACN governors are planning to build something similar although, it stops at Asaba (Delta state).

Whichever way, it must be done. Imagine the amount of lives that will be saved along the Benin-ore road if we had this facility.

In my opinion, if the FG is wasting time, the SE regional committee should do it for their people! SE governors need to start taking up their people's aspirations.

Here we go again.

We hate Nigeria

We don't want to be part of Nigeria

But, we still want and expect the Federal Government Of Nigeria to build our airport, to build our canoe port, to build our roads and bridges, to help us brush our teeth, to help us tie our shoes, to help put us to bed at night when we go to sleep.

All while other people are strapping on their shoes and doing things for themselves. The last time you cried and lose sleep over airport, na the same tired and old airstrip den slap ribbon on top with ladder for Odechukwu to commission with all your leaders dey look on like mumu wey just witness abracadabra.

Incompetency is a disease.

That is certainly the obvious solution!

Isn't that gonna be the national railway? From the video, the trains used are faster and modern. Secondly, I doubt if its gonna serve the "northern" part of the country.

Whatever way they do it, I believe the SE regional committee can take this on and actually do something. . . .at least, a bridge and railway to Asaba. Single states are building bridges these days; I wonder what is stopping them (take into account that 2 SE states are oil producing). We must not wait until the Niger-bridge collapses (God forbid!).

[center]Benefits to the Collaborating States

The Summit will present to the 5 States in the Zone a Blue print for the rapid transformation of the bartered economy of the South East.

It will also create a forum for the governments of the 5 States to Strategize and synergize on common economic problems of the zone.

It will help the governments in the zone to fully discuss and comprehend the blueprint that will emerge from the summit and thereby facilitate its effective implementation.

To provide a strategic plan for redressing the grossly inadequate power supply in the zone by encouraging the establishment of independent power plants and the reactivation of Oji-River Thermal Station.

Call attention to the deplorable state of railways and road network in South East and propose action towards their amelioration.

Call attention to the need for expeditious action on the protracted issues of dry port, export free zone, dredging of River Niger and a second bridge over the Niger as critical success factors for the transformation of the South East Nigerian Economy.

Produce the strategic plan for raising a centralized power base that will promote and actualize the political and economic interests of the zone.

^^^Hehehe grin. No such luck mate. If you're riding a bicycle, b/4 leaving the house you have to say your last prayers (just incase) and take your chances with the impatient Nigerian Drivers and their tokunbo cars with dodgy brakes.

See your long throat for 'separate section' wink.

its a shame there is no leader in Igbo land, a rally figure, the igbos or rather Nigerians living in the eastern part of the country shd not be waiting on the FG to do poo cos it will only be politicalize. 300 big onitsha marketers can single handedly (not an English word) fund and deliver this project.

The eastern states with their western and mid western state in parternship with BIG BOYS shd pull resources together and fund this development, build modern high speed train line linking LAGOD TO ONITSH, PASSING THRU WARRI AND FINALLY TERMINATING IN PORTHARCOURT.

shm.... dont know why our people are so blind

Minister blames take-off of 2nd Niger bridge on procurement process

By FAVOUR NNABUGWU
ABUJA—Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, has said the 2nd Niger Bridge was being delayed by the procurement process deployed to ensure a good job was done.

Onolememe, who spoke while playing host to Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State in Abuja, explained that the procurement process started in December 2011, adding that because of the special procurement being followed in the execution of the project, the take off had been delayed.

He said: “From December last year, the procurement process kicked off and because it is a special procurement process and not just a normal procurement, it is a little bit different from that because it is a hybrid between the proper Public Private Partnership PPP, and the usual contract procurement

”because of interest of the Federal Government, it is taking up 30 percent equity participation while the successful concessionaire will take the remaining 70 percent.

“I want to assure you that within the next two to three weeks, the transaction adviser for that particular project will be announced and kick start the final stage of the procurement process.

“But we are upbeat that between the last quarter of this year and the first quarter of next year, the breaking of ground for that project will happen.

The Minister stressed that the successful concessionaire will move to site because President Goodluck Jonathan assured the people of the South East during electioneering period that he will deliver the project to them during the first term of his administration.

“I want to assure the people of the South South and South East that we are very committed to that project and we will hopefully deliver on that project,” he added.

“I recalled, that shortly after I took over office, you consistently pursued the issue of the ravaging gully erosion in Onitsha between km 0 and the bridge head up to Upper Iweka, of the city where I had the privilege of inspecting that particular devastation as it were then with you one or two occasion and because of your persistent the federal government quickly intervene in that particular sorry situation and I’m happy to report that today that particular has been completely recovered by the FG.”

In his response, Governor Obi expressed his appreciation and satisfaction to the Minister for the visible presence of the Federal Ministry of Works in Anambra State.

“But there is something that I have come to also request and discuss with the Minister in that they need to accelerate the rate of works especially with the impending rains, like the Enugu Onitsha road as a case in point which needs some form of acceleration.

”For example within the capital city of territory of Awka there are also some rehabilitation works that needs to be carried out there. He added that of serious concern to the people of south east is the all important 2nd Niger bridge project which the President to undertake if elected into office,” the governor said.
