The Holy Spirit In Evangelism by Nobody: 1:33pm On May 13, 2012
Acts 1:8 “but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."

Two areas in which the Holy Spirit must work

There are two areas in which the Holy Spirit must work. He must work in the unbeliever, and He must work through you!

Evangelism without the Holy Spirit is impossible. Sure, you can talk about Jesus and maybe even convince someone that they need Him, but unless the Holy Spirit is working in them they will not come to a “saving faith.” John 6:65 “And He said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto Me, except it were given unto him of My Father.”

• John 16:8 "And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: "of sin, because they do not believe in Me; "of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; "of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

• 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5 “knowing, brethren beloved by God, His choice of you; for our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.

Unless the Spirit of God comes with the word of God, it will be to us a dead letter (John 6:63; 2 Cor 3:6). Thus they received it by the power of the Holy Ghost. They were fully convinced of the truth of it, so as not to be shaken in mind by objections and doubts; and they were willing to leave all for Christ, and to venture their souls and everlasting condition upon the truth of the gospel revelation.)

Conditions that must be met for us to exercise the power of the Holy Spirit

i) In order for us to exercise the power of the Holy Spirit in
evangelism, we must be in a right relationship with God. The importance of holiness cannot be over emphasised. Psalm 66:18 “If I regard wickedness in my heart, The Lord will not hear;”

• 1 Thessalonians 4:7-8 “For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit. (NKJV)

ii) We must live in obedience to the Word of God.
• Josh 1:8 “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may [a]be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will [b]have success.” Disobedience quenches the Holy Spirit in us 1 Thessalonians 5:19 “Do not quench the Spirit;”

• Ephesians 5:18-21 “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; and be subject to one
another in the fear of Christ.

Living in obedience to the Word of God includes the relationship with our spouses.

• 1 Peter 3:7 “You husbands likewise, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with a weaker vessel, since she is a woman; and grant her honour as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.”

• Eph 5:22-24 “Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Saviour of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.

iii) Living a life of worship and prayer
Worshipping God is an essential ingredient in exercising the gift of the Holy Spirit and making our evangelism effective.

• 1 Timothy 2:8 “Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension.

• Exodus 17:11 “And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.”

• Psalm 141:1-2 “O Lord, I call upon Thee; hasten to me! Give ear to my voice when I call to Thee! May my prayer be counted as incense before Thee; The lifting up of my hands as the evening offering.”

iv) Studying the Word of God
The knowledge and understanding of God’s Word enhances the authority we exercise as believers.

• Isaiah 55:10-11 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

• Romans 10:17 “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

When we look at these things we do not see a “Formula,” rather a check list to see if our heart is right with God and those around us. Once we are in the proper spiritual state there are a couple of other things we need to be aware of:

i) Don’t preach to the intellect!

• 1 Cor. 2:4-5 “And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.”

ii) Leave them in the “womb of conviction!”

It is the Holy Spirit Who does the conviction not us.
• John 16:8 "And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: "of sin, because they do not believe in Me; "of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; "of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.”

• Rom 2:14 “for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.”

GOD Bless You.
