Inferiority complex is the major problem of Nigerians.
What is wrong in taking hard line to foster growth and demand for local products. What does Dell, Asus, acer etc do differently from Zinox
This same approach has been taken by several governments from across the world. Now Nigeria has done it and Nigerians are complaining. What else could please Nigerians ?
Go to Japan/South Korea and look for Benz, Volvo, renault,Audi etc, then u would amswer for ur self.

This is another smart move by Government, it's time to reduce unemployment, encourage local producers, and of course save foreign exchange.

Way to go!

Good product speaks for itself. No foreign government enforced people to be using android phones and Linux OS, despite the fact that they are Open source software. they should know how to compete globally and strategically market their product. Government didn't enforce people to register on nairaland because Seun did his assignment well. The total number of registered members can compete globally. even God didn't Enforce Himself on people!

Who is fooling who? Does any Naija company actually produce PCs. Can we even make a simple resistor or diode?

Whether Omatek n Zinox assemble, the laptops are still sh.it . People have defended the enforcing of this for govt institutions, we're talking of cutting costs etc, how much good does it do, wen theyr more broken down laptops than functioning ones? What is their support like? Why shud u pay more for less? WHY?
Re: FG Enforces Ban On Foreign Computers: HP, LG & Samsung To Lose by amblors(m): 10:59pm On May 16, 2012
The power sector is crying for sth like this, I'm def not talking of made in nigerian generators. Generators ought to be banned, so wen big man no get light for house, they'll work on the power sector *wishful thinking* . Well sum1 talked of finding volvo in Japan, Toyota is a worldwide automaker, a renowed one @ dat, I don't think other car brands are banned der, if those cars have factories there my guess is people r gonna drive em if they choose. That's beside the point anyways, the idea is good, but def not meant for the Computing Sector.

THOSE GOVTS AROUND THE WORLD ENSURED THAT THEY HAD STEADY ELECTRICITY, SECURITY AND ENOUGH RESOURCES TO PRODUCE IN PLACE BEFORE THEY BANNED ANYTHING

I fink it goes beyond formulating policies to implementing them. I hardly see Nigeria having the stamina to do so. I'm not saying there are no capable local producers of PC because "Zinox" have proven beyond reasonable doubts that they are good at it(for those who know about the company)

What I would like to know is what they intend to do with the old laptops? I hope they won't be given out to their cronnies then new ones will be bought in line with the policy? As usual this is just a way for some people to stylishly embezzel!

Even if poorly implemented, it will give Zinox and others some breathing room. Instead of cutting costs to build cheap computers, they can put in some R&grin and sell at a fair price. I dont see how this is not a win for Nigerians

The governments attitude to banning is really gonna cause more harn than good in the long run.... What we will end up having are Nigerian 'manufacturing/productio' companies that are shielded from economic challenges thus making them complacent and impeding their growth and drive to improve... I wonder what GLO would have been like if they didn't have MTN, Etisalat and other foreign competition in the market... In computing, the same thing should have been employed... Zinox and other Nigerian IT firms should be left to compete for a stance in the market.. America didn't ban foreign softwares and hardwares just so Windows and Apple could grow, but look at them today.. They explored the market and tweaked their product to have an edge.. Same for HP and co... They ban computers but there is a Nigerian made Tablet that is out there and I don't see them banning Ipads and other foreign Tablets... This is a policy that causes more harm than good.. When we sheild local companies from reality, they get comfortable in mediocrity..

Boyoorisha: HP,LG And Samsung To Lose As FG Enforces Ban On Foreign Computers

Hewlett-Packard, Samsung, LG and other foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) will lose their grip on Nigeria’s Personal Computer (PC) market as the Federal Government yesterday finally moved to enforce a comprehensive ban on foreign computers and technology products in public institutions, including schools.

The aim of the ban is to encourage patronage of ‘Made-in-Nigeria’ products and foster growth in the local Information Communications Technology (ICT) industry.

Cleopas Anganye, director-general of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) made this declaration on Tuesday, at a two-day retreat on draft guidelines for home grown IT hardware products.

Stressing the importance of benchmarking Nigeria’s IT products against international standards in order to make them competitive and marketable globally, Angaye further declared that the procurement by public institutions, of non made-in-Nigeria computers, where certified local brands exist, would be an offence punishable by a prison term and fine, under the NITDA Act.

Industry analysts told Business Day yesterday that Nigeria’s computer hardware market has remained underdeveloped due to poor policy formulation and implementation by government, as well as the attendant high cost of equipment acquisition in Nigeria.

According to the analysts, inspite of the growing number of local OEMs and resellers, and the significant growth recorded in the telecommunications industry after the sector was deregulated in 2001; PC penetration remains very low at 7 per 1, 000 Nigerians.

Angaye noted that the Federal Government’s accreditation of computer assembly plants had expired. This, he added, called for the development of new standards for computer manufacturing in the country. After the conclusion of the retreat and subsequent issuance of the new guidelines, the NITDA boss explained, it would be regarded as economic sabotage if Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) did not patronise Nigerian IT products.

Angaye, represented at the retreat by director, standards and regulation, NITDA, Inye Kemabonta, said the IT implementing agency would in the next fortnight, launch a monitoring scheme to ensure compliance by all public institutions across Nigeria.

According to NITDA, under its enabling laws, three key actions would be offences punishable by prison terms, fines or both, if flouted in the emerging dispensation.

First, the public procurement of non made-in-Nigeria computers and IT products where certified local brands exist, is an offence. Secondly, the display and use of non made-in-Nigeria computers in government offices and for government business, where certified local brands are available, is also an offence punishable by law. Lastly, use of non made-in-Nigeria computers in public schools at all levels is likewise an offence.

In the same vein, Chris Uwaje, president of the Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON) enjoined government to provide the enabling environment for indigenous computer manufacturers to thrive.

Angaye further added, “To benefit from this policy, multinational companies are invited to set up production or assembly plants in Nigeria.

According to him, with more than half the population of West Africa, Nigeria has a large enough market to justify foreign direct investment in IT. “Instead, one finds that all the multinational firms operate only marketing and sales promotion offices. The transformation of Nigeria into a developed economy cannot be achieved by being a consumer nation.

“Use of non made-in-Nigeria computers in public schools at all levels. NITDA will seek the collaboration of the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure that the accreditation of schools and renewal of accreditation will depend partly on the establishment of Information Technology labs equipped with locally manufactured IT products”, Angaye concluded.

Local computer manufacturers at the retreat expressed confidence in government’s renewed efforts to develop the IT industry, create employment through local assembly of computers and build the capacity of Nigerian IT entrepreneurs.

“I do not see any reason why our people shy away from locally made PCs. If you open a locally made PCs and other foreign brands, you will find the same components in all of them. We all buy from the same component manufacturer.

If given a chance, we can compete favourably with the foreign brands. We already have the policies on ground that support usage of locally made computers. I think the fundamental issue militating against the development of the industry is implementation of these policies”, Tunde Balogun, president of the Computer and Allied Products Dealers Association of Nigeria (CAPDAN) said

Re: FG Enforces Ban On Foreign Computers: HP, LG & Samsung To Lose by eprynce(m): 8:59am On May 17, 2012
yemmy_ma: ed!ots,

just make Nigeria a manufacturing hub for these companies for instance to serve the African region. Provide infrastructure and a good investment atmosphere. That way, the technologies will be diffused into Nigerians naturally and they will pick things up from there.

Where does this govt get advise?

From their smoking anuses!!! grin

Re: FG Enforces Ban On Foreign Computers: HP, LG & Samsung To Lose by toorich: 9:20am On May 17, 2012
why the stress on educational institutions?

why not enforce the replacement of all computers in the national assemblies and state houses with made in Nigeria systems, that will be a genuine way to kick off the campaign.

i hope Anganye is not welding his powers just because he has some gains to make.

its a good move, especially where multinational companies are to establish assembly plants in the country, but the govt should be sincere with this.

Re: FG Enforces Ban On Foreign Computers: HP, LG & Samsung To Lose by Parnassuss(m): 10:51am On May 17, 2012
Bontee: It is for government institutions and not private or personal oooo. They are not banning the importation of these items into the country but their deployment in public institutions.

Hahahahaha grin grin, I don't know why people are panicking like rabbits in a dog race. This move is not so bad, considering that very few govt agencies actually have need for computers beyond the 'Word applications activities. Zinox should do just fine, besides the bloody thing (Zinox) is immortal! It just can't die. Software wise, its not fantastic but the hardware makes it seem like Robocop birthed it!

YIE? angry angry, No reason am oh. Except u mean only GOVT agencies should drive Innoson then I'm all for it. After all in yankee elected officials have ONLY local brands as official vehicles.

Esejojo: .
You guys must have missed the part in the report that stated that the ban is specifically for PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS aka Government institutions

Wrong. I know for sure it is in force in several multi-nationals. . .especiallyly O&Gs!
Re: FG Enforces Ban On Foreign Computers: HP, LG & Samsung To Lose by RuuDie(m): 12:28pm On May 17, 2012
To the best of my knowledge; for the now, Nigeria and Nigerians are losing big.

Indigenous suppliers/contractors cannot bring in the HP, IBM, Toshiba to their partner companies here and there are no local alternatives that meet the standard/requirements of most companies' operating environment (note: I am talking big, large-scale establishments here). That's a couple of folks shorn off their means of livelihood and some organizations somewhat stuck in a rut with respect to their I.T needs.

Furthermore, because there is no importation; a source of revenue is blocked or shut off for now (not that we ever see the monies anyway) until the whole "Nigerian Content" thing is properly reviewed and correctly implemented.
Re: FG Enforces Ban On Foreign Computers: HP, LG & Samsung To Lose by luciano80(m): 1:33pm On May 17, 2012
this move will not do any good. its not like we manufacture any PC or parts from scratch to deem the hps and compaq a threat. i agree with a previous poster- make 9ja a manufacturing hub. one thing i know in 9ja- "BANNED" items only fuels the want....nothing more
Re: FG Enforces Ban On Foreign Computers: HP, LG & Samsung To Lose by ocelot2006(m): 3:28pm On May 17, 2012
amosy007: Though the policy is right buh this is not the best time for that kinda move.. Just Another stupiid quick move by the govt.. Do we have enough ICT companies to engage in such ban... Even zinox still sucks... I wonder what dis people are thinking *smh*

wondering when they are guna ban toyota and honda for innoson.. Stupiid people

You do know the ban is focused only at public/govt institutions/organisations, not private individuals, right? So how's the policy and its timing not good?
