If i have my was i will poison all the igbo's in the east. I hate them with passion and i pray boko haram will soon visit them and blow out the rotten carcass of their coward ojukwu

@bayooo, pls read the book again,no african book has been able to vividly capture the clash of the white men christianity of coming with the native host and religion except Things fall apart, Weep not child tried but you can't compared it to Things fall apart. It is more popular in the western world because they want to really read about our world and feeling back then from a local perspective not being told by White man.Achebe made them understand that Africans are not babaric and carnivals that kill at will, that the killing of the boy is a sacfrice which is not different from the human sacfrice to the Greek goddess. It tells whiteman misunderstanding of our culture that bring about ingnorant names and labels we were given, Thing fall apart is a masterpiece

@bayoo, I initially thought you are making objective augument but now I think you are biased by comparing Achebe with Ngingui waa Thiong of east african. His WEEP NOT CHILD can never compare to Thing fall Apart even though they wrote about the coming og the whiteman.Achebe is not the greatest african but one of the greatest in literature, like they said, the beautiful ones are not yet born,The great ones are still coming who knows,an african might discover the cure for AIDS.But you trying to rubish prof Achebe by comparing withose Authours is uncalled for. They can never compare, you can gently correct people that nobody is yet the greatest as the world is yet to end to take the roll call.

Dude! I think that's tribalistic, we're all together here. I think its uncalled for. You could try writing your own masterpiece though and have it nominated as one of the most influntial books, then I guess we'll all keep quiet.

What's your point? For your information, Achebe was the one who recommended Weep Not Child, a book written while Ngingui was still a student at Makerere, to Heinemann for publication. That does not make Achebe a superstar or something else, he was just fortunate to be ahead as result of age factor. Comparison goes beyond one book is better than the other. The question we are trying to answer is who is the proverbial greatest author on African soil? My simple answer is available evidence does not suggest Achebe. That does not take anything away from Things Fall Apart or reduce Achebe's greatness.

But calling him the greatest, the first among equals because of one good book is nothing but exaggeration.

@bayoo,How many lion did you have to kill to answer lion killer? One good masterpiece is enough to give you the world and qualify you for one of the greatest.of all those named ,it is only one of their works that stood them out.you don't have to write hundreds of scraps and claim number. For your information both Achebe and Ngingu was both a student and young people before they wrote those books. As I said before, I read both and Weep Not child can never compare, eventhough it is equally good in its own right, that Achebe recommended it does not make it equal to Things fall apart.Ofcourse it is a good work from his fellow author that treats the same issue as him..he is one of the greatest.Things Fall Apart is a timepiece that would endure, for generations.it is one of the art that will offer future generations glimpse into the world of their ancestors. So don't be surprised that it may still be getting award from furture generations even after Achebe is long gone, and you will still complain and probably ask why they are still making noise about, and then our grand children will give him another post humus award ,well we can complain as we won't even be alive.peace.The point is that you be hearing the noise from that book for a long time to come.your children and children's children will hear it. It will outlive all of us.That is the mark of a great book and That is the work of a great author.

Shut it! If you have nothing to contribute, move to the romance section and continue romanticizing my unclothedness. I don't care if it pains you or hurts you deeply, but the truth remains that Achebe, though one of the best African writers, is not the greatest. Deal with it.

Call him Lion killer, or call him Ogbuefi if you like, call him one of the greatest, or one of the best, I don't care and have no issue with such designations. But calling him the best contradicts available evidence.

I can't call Soyinka for instance the best novelist in Africa despite the rare excellence displayed in the Man Died, a collection of prison notes. But he is a versatile writer who have written a number of plays (by the way he won Nobel prize for fashioning the drama of existence, i.e largely for the drama genre of literature), collections of poems and poetry and some novels-autobiographical and fictions. Achebe trumpet is blown largely on Things Fall Apart, other works are next to nothing. Though he has some poems to his credit, he lacks the type of versatility desirable in a typical first among equals.

That's why I keep wondering why people are labeling him the best, the greatest, the superstar when in all sincerity and in all essential points, he is very far, even on African soil based on overwhelming avalanche of evidence, from such a designation. A good book will announce you to the world, that you have arrived, but unfortunately can not make you the best. Consistency, versatility and a number of other factors are needed to win the crown.

When I was in school, I did not have the highest scores in all courses I offered, but still graduated the best because I was most consistent, most versatile and most knowledgeable among my peers. That Achebe is a master story teller, a good novelist does not make him the master poet of the continent (Niyi Osundare would challenge him on that), or the master dramatist (of course we all know the genius). So, how can Achebe be the best? It does not add up.

You have the right to your opinion about Achebe just like those that gave him the honour and millions of people all over the world who credit him as being the best also have the right to their opinion. They say that "one man's food is another man's poinson". So, it's best you respect popular wisdom while maintaining your own position on the person of Chinua Achebe.
