There is no Igbo ceremony without the blessing and blessing of kolanuts or even garden egggs.

Those hidden posts shows that the owners of this forum are at work. Some people want this thread to be a flop but the adm and co are wise.
Do you notice similarities between Nri (Igbo) and Bini cultures here?.

Upon coronation, the Eze is issued a certificate from the govt to make the Ezeship official.

Lol, yeah. Both are fond of beads and white and red clothing.

To add Andre each of those titles of Obi, Nze-obi,Eze-Igwe, Igwe or Eze have a unique feature. For example most Obi's are strictly by inheritance from the 1st son of the deceased king.

@Abagworo. thanks for your contribution.
Nze-Obi and Eze-Igwe, are they titles for traditional rulers or just chiefs, king makers and members of the cabinet?.
In my own Isinweke community, Nzes are ward leaders.
It's true, some Obiship positions are hereditary e.g Agbor. It seems some Ezeship positions are hereditary as well.It seems that Orlu, Owerri and Nnewi are hereditary. The ruling families has been on the throne for 100 years now or thereabout. I would like more Igbo guys to come in here and share some ideas.

Wonderful thread, Andre.

NRI PRIEST: Where is this king from? Very rich culture. Looks like Anambra group.

Yup, definately Anambra. Look at Peter Obi in the corner.
Re: King Making In Igbo Lands by odumchi: 4:43am On May 30, 2012
In Arochukwu, we have three types of Eze.

The first and most prominent of all is the Eze Aro: who is the Eze of all Aro people worldwide. The Eze Aro position is not elected, rather it is hereditary. For one to become the Eze Aro, he must be from a particular village in Arochukwu called Oror.

The second type of Eze is the Eze-ezi meaning lineage/compound head. There are three Eze-ezi in Arochukwu and each Eze presides over a specific lineage within the Aro people. The three lineages are the Ibom Isii (six villages led by Eze Ibom Isii), tbe Ezennachi (the villages led by Eze Ezennachi [the current Eze Aro is the Eze Nnachi]), and the Ezeagwu (led by Eze Ezeagwu).

The last type of Eze is the Eze-ogo meaning village head. There are nineteen Eze-ogo in Arochukwu and their duty is to manage the affairs of their individual villages. The Eze-ogo position is elected by the members of the particular village.

ahhh ndigbo is celebrating their monarchs today from nri to aro but tomorrow they will say they never had monarchs and perfected democracy long before the british set foot in nigeria, and day after that they will reverse to monarchy. whatever suits the discussion na dem they claim... ask dede1 grin grin

btw, i see the edo royal sword representing. no wonder some anambra igbos claim edo ancestry. nice.

Dude, take that your arrogance somewhere with hidden jealousy; We have been using swords before the land of Igodomigodo was settled on!! Most Anambra Igbos dont carry the sword, rather we use the lion skin type shaped like sword. Case in point. This Igwe right is from my town and did you see what he is holding. Bini didnt invent the sword but they made it popular just like Onicha made Ofalla popular! Even you own Oba wears the foamous Nze n' Ozo red hat (okpu nmee) and am very sure its not a part of Bini attires and it was borrowed from their Igbo neighbours. Basicly,we learn from each other!!

Re: King Making In Igbo Lands by PhysicsQED(m): 12:28pm On May 30, 2012
Nri, the hat the Oba of Benin wears on non-ceremonial occasions isn't the ozo hat. I explained this already. Hats with that shape and outline are worn across Africa and the choice of white or red is obviously to match other clothing.

I didn't want to comment on the borrowing of Ada and Eben by this Nri related king from the nearby Onitsha king because I knew all sorts of claims would follow regarding Benin even though there are old pictures of the Nri kings where such swords are conspicuously absent. Let's just say that as direct neighbors we (Edo and Igbo) borrowed from one another and leave it at that.

lol, nri priest, was it not ur fellow igbo brethren who first noticed the similarities between cultures? so i don't understand why u are bitter about what i said. just use the yoruba argument and say it was igbo that influenced edo instead of the other way round. that would have been enough instead of that shtye u wrote up there.

I dont claim what I dont have but I will also correct a misconception when I sense one. And like I said earlier,we learn from each other, shikena.

ok, but i find it funny how u dodged the most important part of my comment.

why do ndigbo claim to have perfected democracy long before the british set foot in nigeria, but on this thread right here u are celebrating kings with hereditary titles from nri to aro? or i guess "double speak" is an igbo phrase and not english?

Bros, I have seen a better picture of the Oba wearing the red heart and not the one weaved with tiny beads,so dont tell what I know. Truth is that we borrowed from each other. Like I said earlier the nma agha(war sword) has been in existence in Igboland before you guys formed the Bini kingdom.
Re: King Making In Igbo Lands by PhysicsQED(m): 1:05pm On May 30, 2012
Nri, I really don't know what picture you're talking about where the hat looks like an ozo hat specifically rather than just a red or white hat, but I'd like to see it.

And my point is that those swords were borrowed from the Onitsha monarchy or from Delta Igbos. If you look at old pictures of Igbo kings or images of Igbo regalia/swords you won't see those two swords specifically, let alone see them together - although you'll see differently shaped swords - unless you're talking about Anioma or Onitsha.

And I don't know who first designed which sword exactly but I have a pretty good idea of the path of cultural diffusion of these items within southern Nigeria based on what I've seen so far.

Nri dont do monarchy; We had PRIEST KINGS who were also celebrated like monarchs but doesnt wield the war like power. He celebrates the Ofalla, new yam festivals, land cleansing when a sacrilage has been commited, counting of the years and months and the rest. He prides over all the Nri institutions but cant impose his orders on anybody but he is still revered. He is the mouthpiece of the gods and only interpretes the messages and maintains all the practices. So,my point is that we do have a kings but with a very unique style. Sorry,if it doesnt suit your definition of what a king should be doing.

lol..ok, so nri even though not a monarch but is a king presiding over a kingdom, that's funny.
and from what u wrote there he seems to have monopolised the power becos he is not only the king but the priest who is the mouthpiece to the gods. so where does perfection of democracy fit into all that?

It's close, sure. But is the top center portion of the hat the same and is there a white version of the ozo hat?

the igbo red hat looks good though, and im going to wear it during my traditional marriage. im wearing three outfits that day, first as an edo chief, then rock yoruba agbada with kabiyesi cap, then come round the day up as an igbo chief from ndigbo as mazi ezotik grin grin

It will be adviceable to know that you must have an "Ozo" title before you wears it in Igboland! So,restrict it to Bini.
