Stay focused guys! grin

@olanajim

tinkerberry made a valid point that we must acknowledge and that is the "Nigerian factor".  The reason most foreign investors shun Nigeria is because of this.  Like I said--what are the modalities? I never embark on anything I do not feel will yield fruit as time and resources are precious and limited.  Part of making a project successful is realizing what our short comings are and what  we are up against. Yes, we have a long way to go and that is why I am concerned about embarking on any kind of project so I do not face another disappointing feeling of lack of progress or wasted energy, time and resources.  We have to have the basics to operate anything in Nigeria.  We do not even have that.  What are the basics--facilities and resources to operate with.

How do you mentor people in the presence of high level corruption and lack of basic amenities like electricty and constant running water, not to talk of safety concerns.  The atmosphere has to be conducive for such tasks or you find yourself running a charitable organization.  Mentoring costs nothing and in Nigeria--it might just cost you your life if you are not careful--not knowing what kind of environment you might find your self or what kinds of people you are dealing with.  You have to make frequent trips to your subjects and you have to devote time to them.  Is this possible in Nigeria? undecided

Thanks tinkerberry.  You made a valid point.  Unfortunately--it was missed by most.  I understand your frustrations and have experienced many to the point of defeat.  What was missed in what you said is that lecturers by virtue of their positions in the University system in Nigeria could serve as good mentors since they are in close proximity with the students often.

Let's face it--aisha2 like most of us---is a busy person--and needs time and dedication to get this concept going.  Mentoring is not a part time job. Like most things in Nigeria---I do not want a mentoring process that is a half-baked adventure. Like most abandoned projects in Nigeria.

I told you of how when I was in trouble in school, a lecturer-took interest in my problems and decided to point me in the right direction.  Unfortunately in Nigeria--the reverse is the case.  Most of the lecturers try to de-rail you. sad

At my job---my main mentor for achieving my long term goals is a Nigerian who is still in the system and has demonstrated that he is a role model.  I have others in my department and they are constantly checking up on me to make sure I stick with my goals.

What credible mentoring icons do we have in Nigeria.  For you to be a mentor--you must have something to show to the students that you are a motivator.  We are talking of people from different works of life on this thread committing to embark on a project and I hope it is not a fantasy or all for the "talk" of it.

My question is what do we want these students as the mentoring subjects to achieve.  What are the goals and who are the role models? Once again modalities, modalities, modalities.

Is it practical? undecided

Re: Do You Have A Career Mentor? by olanajim(m): 10:44am On Nov 24, 2007
Alimondjoy,
I did not missed the point by thinkerberry, I just read deeper into it. It is an open secret that most Lecturers discourage their students from aiming high in their career. Their method of teaching, their way of giving assignments and expecting mass failure, and their attitude to failing students show they don't care. They only care about their salaries. Imagine as she said, a lecturer making such a comment about his student? I have heard a lecturer saying that his student will not pass an exam! That is their mentality and no one need such a person as mentor no matter how intelligent he maybe. Yet, we have exeption ones among them. A mentor would be transmiting not just his knowledge to his protege but his personality. Therefore in choosing a mentor, we must realize that we are equally exposing ourself to his personality.

From my experience; I once had a Guardian who is now late. I lived with him for four years to learn what made him thick. He was successful but he had a weakness- he is a hot tempered man. Sure, I succeeded in learning what I went for but, I had to spend the next two years to extirpate that unwanted emotion I picked from him. I guess, I got too personal with him.

Yes, the facility and provision for the attainment of that goal is not in existence, but it has to be done. I would discuss it with Aisha2 and hope you would lend support.

Something bother me about this Nigerian factor. You go to a man to mentor you, then you outilines your goals and plan. Somehow, he started poaching on your idea to his own benefit! This has happened to someone I know and it was very sad experience for him. That is why some guys are reluctant at opening up to a stranger.

Nevertheless we have to do it. We have to find a way.

THE MEN WHO BUILD THE FUTURE ARE THOSE WHO KNOW THAT GREATER THINGS ARE YET TO COME AND THAT THEY THEMSELVES CAN HELP BRING IT ABOUT. THEIR MINDS ARE ILLUMINED BY THE BLAZING SUN OF HOPE, THAT THEY HAVE NO TIME TO DOUBT.
Re: Do You Have A Career Mentor? by almondjoy(f): 10:54am On Nov 24, 2007
@olanajim

Sure. It looks good on paper--Can't wait to see a plan. tongue  Okay, here is a process constituting a hypothetical "feasiblity study".

Despite all the problems posited by the almighty "Nigerian factor" curse, I am anxious to see how the idea of career mentoring can prosper in Nigeria without the element of "Godfatherism".  As far as educational mentoring is concerned--I am at a loss as to what to think as far as that is concerned.  The environment is not conducive. How do you mentor students to a future of unemployment?  How do you mentor a "graduate" with a " Meaningless Paper degree"? undecided

Sorry about my less than optimistic mindset.  I am used to an orientation where things are done with successful outcomes, rather than by trial and error.  Please, excuse my level of comprehension.  I have not lived my live in a game of chance for the past 10 years--like I did in Nigeria.

If I do not have a plan--I do not embark on a project. I am practical and not so emotional about things.  I may be in love with the concept of mentoring--but I am not carried away by it.  Besides, I have to see it work before I have an interest in participation.  Just call it --- a foreign investor's nightmare. wink

Once again folks, l see your Nigerian educational standards have taught you nothing else but to digress and emotionally approach subjects.  I will have to drag y'all like children in a classroom---BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD!!! cheesy--Just kidding--not to insult anyone. grin

Please list some of the goals you think--not feel--that academic mentoring or career mentoring should have between mentors and mentees.
Re: Do You Have A Career Mentor? by olanajim(m): 11:32am On Nov 24, 2007
This is a public forum. I would send them to your email. But we would keep looking for ideas. Right now, we would need to clear some debris and to compare idea.

Yes, our educational system is corrupted. Look, it is not just at university but also in Secondary school. A generation had been wasted and sacrifice on altar of mediocrity and another is wasting right now.

I mentioned something to you about Tony elumelu who had 3rd class and others. But today, this same people sad atop organisation that would never allow a third class holder to enter their fold. In fact, the new order today is to go for your masters after your NYSC. And then, you find that even first degree is becoming a nuisance.

I once visit a secondary school where a friend with master degree was teaching JSS1-3 while the younger teacher with HND was teaching SSS1-3 in the same subject! My finding later show that the master holder can't teach the senior class without floundering. What a nation!

Yet, we keep ranting about qualification and grades. We are more concerned with paper value than with mental value.

It is tough! But I see a revolution in years to come.

So the mentoring process would have to do alot of grandworks and hopefully, it would work. You would have to provide back up and ways it can work.

"when there is nothing to loss in embarking on an undertaking which fail and everything to gain when successful, then it is worth doing."
Re: Do You Have A Career Mentor? by somze(f): 12:07pm On Nov 24, 2007
Yes I agree we need a proper and well detailed plan. We can not afford to embark on this project based on emotion, luck or pure chance. We need a detailed description of our vision, goals, time lines, targets, staff, number of protege, plan of action, impact assessment and implication etc.

I want us to put everything into perspective, even the negatives and how we can turn it into positives. We need to understand our environment and work with it . . . I saw Renaissance Group ad on CNN concerning Africa's Emerging markets and it caught my attention. As much as we can cry and whine about the environment, foreign investors come in here, work it out and profit. MTN is a vivid example of the modern day Firm in Nigeria. Oil sectors show other examples. Everything can be achieved.

A great man once said that - "Any subject can be taught to any student at any level as far as it is taught with intellectual integrity."

We can change the mentality of folks here even with the negative forces around. Lets just get the plan and the right set of people to do the job.

I AM IN . . . i can help with the business plan

Re: Do You Have A Career Mentor? by bolaoni(m): 12:49pm On Nov 24, 2007
Hi guys, it seems I have been away for eternity. I have to be sleeping on this thread so that
I don't have to keep reading all these great posts at a go. I am really proud of everyone that has contributed to the progress of this topic.

I have been a mentor to so many young kids for some time. Though we don't have a particular meeting day, all I am concerned is for them to have a dream and live their dreams. By His special grace, I have guys that are doing well because of their interactions with me. I intend taking this to another level pretty soon.

So guys, if you have drawn out plans on mentoring, then let me into it. I am not so good at the planning, I just implement it. So somze, come up with your plans and let's see.

Guys, there will be difficulties, but we shouldn't allow that to derail us. I have always learnt to do things I want to do in the face of obstacles. If during the course of the event we need success stories of those who have risen above their situations despite all the difficulties they went through in this Nigeria, I will be glad to supply them. So difficulties will be there but they must NEVER be our focus.

I have connected with Najim on YIM, will add somze now that he is "clean" grin grin grin
When we have all connected ourselves on YIM, we can group chat to brainstorm on how to go about things wink

I am loving this my people kiss
Re: Do You Have A Career Mentor? by olanajim(m): 12:52pm On Nov 24, 2007
So how do we get about this? We have to communicate. That is first stage. Then set a goal and put everything in perspective. We don't need more than five team. And from my counting we have four.

We know the problem. Let do something now. We do the evaluation and planning as well as the feasibility study. This is not a project that can be rushed. But a project needing careful plan that would take into cognizance the Nigerian factors.

Don't worry Somze-- I trust your born-againship!--As for the "goat people", I will keep it at that---I do not want to spoil this "fine thread". Keep us posted with your findings as you work "behind the camera scenes". As far as I am concerned--this may be a public forum-but there is nothing clandestine about the activities of "mentoring".
