I know they were largely Nubians/Sudanese. They border Egypt, so this shouldn't come as a surprise.
'Cushite' was a blanket term used by non-Africans for all Black groups outside of Egypt, including India, Arabia, the Levant and Mesopotamia. This actually included the probably small number of Bantu groups they came in contact with. They made no distinction, everyone Black was a 'burnt-face' which is what Cushite means, even the Black Indians or Dravidians were regularly called "Cushites with straight hair". That's how the name 'Hindu Kush' derived its name. A Cushite is an all-encompassing, pejorative word for Black, period.
